My Morning with the Girls

Hello there,

Do you ever just take the time to sit and say to yourself “I’m so very fortunate.”  Well that’s exactly how I feel this morning.  It has nothing to do with money or possessions.  Believe me, Russ and I live a very modest life.  It’s just a sense of being.  🙂

This morning I got to have girl time with my favorite chicks.  That’s probably what contributed to my inner peace.  I went outside to find these ladies waiting at the gate for me.

I always think, look they love me so much.  They cannot wait to have time with me so they are waiting at the gate.

Then this happens. . . . . . . . . .

They stampede right by me to get to their favorite place.  The bird feeders.  🙂  This is were they find wonderful sunflower seeds that the birds have tossed out to them.

That’s okay, they eventually notice I am there in the background, quietly having my coffee and enjoying my morning.

One by one they come to say “good morning, when did you arrive here?”

This is my favorite girl Sugar.  She likes to show off her big red comb from all sides, apparently.  I think I would too if I had that on my head.

There was one girl missing this morning and I knew exactly where she could be found.  This is Goldie and she has gone Broody.  That means she is trying to hatch some eggs and relentlessly stays on the nest.  Poor girl, I keep taking the eggs from under her.  They are not fertile, we don’t have a Rooster in our flock and they will never hatch, but try telling her that.

Okay, I’m getting the look from Red.  This is her “go get me some Kale” look.  I am their slave so let’s go to the garden.

On the way to the garden I passed the bleeding hearts in bloom and the heavenly smell of the Lilac in bloom.  To bad this isn’t smell a vision.

We arrive at the little front garden where many of my Spring veggies are growing.

There is the Kale.  “Got it Red.”  “Be right there!”

After giving Red her Kale, I get to kick back with my coffee once again to enjoy the views and soak up the morning sun before the task of the day start.  There is tilling and tomato planting on the agenda.

If you are in the area, come by and sit a spell.  🙂

Well I hope you have enjoyed seeing a little piece of my world.  Thank you all for being part of it.

Have a wonderful day.   Mine is off to a great start!
Until my next post. . . . . . .  .

Huge Hugs!

Michelle, I thoroughly enjoyed reading your note and viewing your photos of the girls and your property. What a blessing form God. I would love to be sitting there drinking coffee and soaking it all up. I love animals and nature. I also love gardening. We are far behind and do not have space on our property for a vegetable garden, but we have been blessed for the past couple years to share a piece of land with a friend to grow vegetables. Still learning as we go. Your garden looks so organized and flourishing. Thanks again for this pick-me-up on this dreary New York morning.

  3. Wow…..I love it when you share photos of what’s going on around your place. Thoroughly enjoyed you taking us on a stroll around your property. You can do that ANYTIME….
I really enjoyed seeing the Bleeding Heart plant. I used to have one years and years ago when we lived in WA state. But, I haven’t seen them around Central Oregon. Love the Lilacs, too. Remember the Iris Gardens in Salem?

We gave up trying to garden here….not enough room, for one thing and you we just didn’t have enough sun in our back yard to grow much. But, I have enough rhubarb to feed an army!

Thanks again and do it more often!!!!

    Hugs,
    Char

  6. I want to ask you about your lilac. I mistakenly ordered a French Lavender Lilac thinking it was French Lavender in a lilac color. DUH! Now I don’t know what to do with it. What is its growth habit like? Can you offer any tips? Thanks.

Reading your post gave me an inner calm too, your photographs were beautiful, and although it’s a cliche, sometimes it is the little things that make us happy and make us smile. Thank you for sharing. Best wishes from a fellow demo in the UK 🙂

    • Hi Kathie,

It is a drag to have a hen broody. They seem to be at it forever. You can break the broody spell by confining the hen in a place away from the nesting boxes. I use a small run that I use for baby chicks to put mine in during the day. Of course have food and water in their for her. You can also block a portion of your current run off to place the broody girl in. 🙂

  9. I have tried every thing, including confinement! I finally decided to pull her out 2-3 times daily for food, water, and social time. But she still heads back to the nest.

We have had our baby chicks in a watermelon box from our local grocery store’s produce dept…and the other night we walk into the garage and found 5 of our chicks out and perched on the side of the box! Time for a wire cover…lol Still have a little bit to do on the coop before we can move them out there but it’s almost done…mostly just have the run to build and need to redo the nestbox dividers.

Thank you Michelle, for the morning walk through. Your garden looks great! We just picked our first zucchini night before last for salads and it was so yummy! I have peas galore and we are finally seeing baby tomatoes! YAY!!! I love the Bleeding Hearts, I planted some but they have never done anything. My aunt just gave me a mock orange ornamental tree, it’s so pretty and my hummingbirds like it…but it’s extra special to me because it was my Mother’s.

Anyway, I’m headed back to bed…just came in to see why my computer screen was blaring light all over the house and saw your post still open and that I had not left my comment! LOL Monitor didn’t shut down for some reason. Night night! 😀
