Chilling – Tutorial #446

Hey There,

I’m back from beautiful Connecticut and had a wonderful time as usual teaching my brayer techniques to some truly fabulous students.   Here lately, I have been asking my advance brayer students to challenge me with a scene that they would like for me to do as a tutorial here on my blog.  Well, my Monroe, Connecticut students challenged me to create icicles and to use the penguin.   I think I covered both with this scene.  What do you think?

I like it!

Let’s get started on today’s tutorial. . . . .

Supplies:

Stamps: Stampin’ UP! Zoo Review
Paper: Stampin’ Up! Whisper White, Not Quite Navy, Baja Breeze and Sahara Sand card stocks and Vellum
Ink: Stampin’ UP! Sahara Sand, Baja Breeze, Basic Black, Not Quite Navy and Island Indigo
Accessories: Stampin’ Up! Sponges, Mini Brads, Snowflack and Decorative Punches, Paper Snips, Brayer, White Gel Pen, More Mustard and Basic Black Markers, Post it Notes
Techniques: Brayering, Masking

Ripped a hill in a post it note and used it to mask my snow area on a 3.5″ x 5.5″ piece of Whisper White.

Brayered Baja Breeze ink at the top of the card stock.

Brayered Island Indigo ink at the top of the card stock, not covering the Baja Breeze ink entirely.

Brayered Not Quite Navy ink at the top of the card stock, not covering the Island Indigo ink entirely.

Brayered Sahara Sand ink at the post it note edge.

Removed the mask and created another mask with 2 hills ripped in it.  Put it below the horizon line and sponged Baja Breeze ink at the post it note edge to create a lower hill.

Removed the mask and stamped the penguin using Basic Black ink.

Colored the penguin in with a white gel pen, Basic Black marker and More Mustard marker for his beak and feet.

took a 3.5″ square piece of vellum and cut icicle shapes in it using my paper snips.

Did the same thing with a 3.5″ square piece of Whisper White card stock.

Sponged a bit of Sahara Sand ink on the right sides of the icicles.

Layered the vellum and Whisper White icicles and adhered them to the top of the main image panel.

Punched a Decorate label punch out of Baja Breeze card stock and then cut it in half.

Punched a Snowflake out of Whisper White card stock and cut it in half.

Added 1 Not Quite Navy, 2 Baja Breeze and 1 Sahara Sand card stock panels, the punches and 4 mini brads.

Here is the finished card measuring 5″ x 6.5″.

May your day be filled with cool breezes.

Until my next post. . . . .  .

A Letter Of Thanks From Project Give Thanks

I wanted to share this with my readers and thank you personally for supporting Project Give Thanks by sending your hand stamp creations to this wonderful cause.  You all rock!

A letter of thanks from Sonja Knaisch.

Give Thanks for the three “R’s.”

Project Give Thanks | August 17, 2011 at 3:45 pm | Categories: Uncategorized | URL: http://wp.me/p1pUJX-bq

Give Thanks for the three “R’s.”  You know, rest, relaxation and r-wine.  No, really, it’s Reduce, Reuse and Recycle I’m talkin’ ’bout.

This card was sent by Jenny Fulton who said “Please include these cards in Project Give Thanks.  They were all made by stampers who attended the 2010 SU convention.  (I just added the backs.)  I roomed with your sister at the convention – What fun!”

First, sorry Jenny, if Michelle snored.  You know, sometimes…  😉  Otherwise she is a hoot to room with and I do it as often as I can.  Secondly, you have discovered the seed that grew Project Give Thanks.  I’d seen Michelle’s wonderful card fronts she’d collected at conventions and other gatherings.  They mostly sat in a box after she’d studied and admired them.  We discussed how storing them was a waste of beautiful artistic talent and effort.  Then I went through Cancer treatments and noticed how many cards I sent.  Store bought cards didn’t feel special enough to send to people who saved my life!  After healing a bit, and getting my mind back, I put the box of card fronts together with the need that Cancer Survivors have for really special cards!  That’s when Project Give Thanks was born.  I started with a huge box of card fronts that Michelle donated.

Anyone who has a collection of cards fronts sitting in a box can do as Jenny did and put backs on them, pair with an envelope and send them in for Cancer Survivors to use!  It’s a fantastic way to REUSE a goldmine of creativity!  More reuse ideas… Often artists include a detached sheet in the card to be written on.  Some Survivors have noticed this and like how the the card can be reused.   Also, many artists reuse found items and paper scraps in their creations.  The “reusing” doesn’t end there.  I reuse or RECYCLE the boxes and packing that the cards are sent in.  The ziplock bags are pulling double duty everywhere in my house!   “Bing” I’ve just thought of something… there is a new small shop that mails organic chocolates (how did I know this?) and they probably could use some free packaging…

So, there’s Reusing and Recycling going on with PGT, what about Reducing?  Well, think about all of the effort, time and travel (gas/carbon) we’re saving Cancer Survivors by delivering the cards they NEED right to them!  I always group my errands to prevent a special trip to Boulder so we’re not even generating extra fumes for delivery. Hot Damn!  Oh, I do get so excited about the environmental stuff.  It’s the social police in me 😉

Oops, gone on too long.

Give thanks for the reuse of card fronts and the successful project they led us to.

Sending a renewable hug to each of you!

Sonja

Breaking the Bank – Tutorial #445

Hey there,

This card came to mind yesterday right as I was leaving the car dealership after having some work done on my van.  “Ouch” says my wallet.    Actually, this little scene came to my mind the minute I seen this cute little pig in the Stampin’ Up! catalog.

Any suggestion on a sentiment for this card?  I would love to hear them.

Also, is this really a sheep, not a pig, lol.  Well my apples on my last post were really pears, yikes!  Funny what a mind tells you, grin.  🙂

Before I start the tutorial I want to announce a few Brayer and  Direct to Paper workshop locations I have added to my calendar.   Check it out by clicking on the location, I will be in Sparta, New Jersey,  Piedmont, Alabama and Longmont (Gunbarrel), Colorado!  Woohoo!  I hope you get the chance to attend and create with me.

Now on with the tutorial, I have packing yet to do before I leave for Monroe, CT in the morning!  Connecticut ready or not here I come with a brayer in my hand!

Stamped the hammer (ommitted the sentiment) using Basic Black in on a scrap piece of Whisper White cardstock.

On the same scrap of card stock, stamped the pig using Melon Mambo ink.

Cut the two images out using my super sharp Stampin’ Up! paper snips.  Love these scissors!

Colored the hammer in with Sahara Sand and Soft Suede markers.

Added a shadow to the bottom of the pig using a Rose Red marker.  Colored in his eyes and nose holes using a Basic Black marker.  Added a pink button for his snout.

Added a line on the top of his head as the bank slot and added Basic Black marker to the bottom of his feet.

Masked the bottom 1 1/2″ of a 3.5″ x 4.5″ piece of Whisper White card stock with a post it note.

Brayered Lucky Limeade ink on the unmasked area.

Stamped my unmounted Baroque Border wheel using Rich Razzelberry ink.

Sponged Old Olive ink at the bottom of the unmasked area.

Removed the mask and turned it around so it is masking the top of the card stock.

Brayered Rich Razzelberry ink on the unmasked area.

Sponged Early Espresso ink at the top of the unmasked area.

Moved the post it note mask down a bit and sponged a shadow in for the pig.

Added 2 Melon Mambo and 1 Lucky Limeade panels, adhered the pig and hammer, colored the hammer head in using a Silver gel pen, added tiny brads to simulate coins.

Added a 5″ x 6.5″ Rich Razzelberry panel.

Here is the finished project measuring 5″ x 6.5″.

May your bank not be broken!

Until my next post. . .  . . . . .

Hugs,

Michelle

Apple Basket Reflection – Tutorial #444

Hey All,

Here is a little reflection number for you using a stamp from the up and coming Stampin’ Up! Holiday Mini Catalog that will be in effect September 1, 2011.   I created this card for my Stampin’ Up’s Down Line Technique Swap.   The technique for this month was reflections.  Hope you like this little sneak peak.

After quite a few requests, I have decided to share my recipes from the canning of salsa, bread, muffins and cookies I made the other day using my veggies from my garden.  I will put them at the end of this post.  Enjoy!

Let’s get started. . . . .

Supplies:

Stamps: Stampin’ Up! Always Thankful
Paper: Stampin’ Up! Whisper White, Cherry Cobbler and Old Olive
Ink: Stampin’ Up! Basic Black, Soft Suede, Old Olive, Tempting Turquoise and Not Quite Navy
Accessories: Stampin’ Up Markers (Sahara Sand, River Rock, Pink Pirquette, Rose Red, Regal Rose, Old Olive), White Gel Pen, Brayer, Sponges, Top Note Die, Big Shot Machine, Cherry Cobbler Seam Binding, Antique Brads
Techniques: Brayering, Reverse image

Get your copy of the new 2011-2012 Stampin’ Up! Brayered Tempting Turquoise at the top and bottom of a 3″ x 4″ piece of Whisper White card stock.

Brayered Not Quite Navy ink at the top and bottom of the card stock, not covering the Tempting Turquoise entirely.

Stamped the image from the soon to be released Stampin’ Up! set “Always Thankful” using Basic Black ink.   Also created the reflection image by stamping the image with Basic Black ink on a Stamp-a-ma-jig plastic sheet and then flipping the sheet over and rubbing the back side of the plastic to transfer it onto the card stock.

Masked the bottom of the card stock and sponged Old Olive ink at the post it note edge creating the ground.

Flipped the post it note around so it mask the upper part of the card stock and sponge Old Olive at the post it note edge.

Removed the mask and colored the Baskets in with Sahara Sand marker.  Colored the upper basket twice so it is darker in tone.

Colored the apples in using a Pink Pirquette Marker.  Coloring the upper apples twice.

Added Regal Rose marker to the bottom apples and Rose Red to the upper apples.

Colored the shadowed side of the baskets using a River Rock marker.  Colored over the upper basket shadow twice.

Added Old Olive marker to the ground under the upper basket and to the leaves of the upper basket.

Masked the bottom of the card stock again and added Soft Suede to the bottom of the ground area.

Moved the mask to mask the upper part of the card stock and added Soft Suede ink to the bottom of the reflection side.

Added White Gel pen highlights tot he upper apples and then created white gel pen highlights in the water.

Assembled the card, adding a Cherry Cobbler Top Note Die cut, Cherry Cobbler Ribbon, Antique brads, Old Olive panel and Cherry Cobbler panel.

Here is the finished card measuring 4.25″ x 5.5″.

Canning Time

Salsa Anyone!!!!!

I’m having to take a bit of a break from blogging.  You see, my veggies from my garden just won’t wait until it is an appropriate time for me to can them.  I have to work on the veggy’s schedule, lol.    Really, Russ and I have been so blessed with an aboundance of tomatoes, peppers, zuchini, squash and cucumbers.   Our garden has really been producing.

Yesterday I made and canned two different Salsa’s (mild and hot) and multiple loaves of zuchini pineapple bread.  Most of the bread will be frozen for future use, yum.  Today I’ll make zuchini cookies, I think.  Got to try to keep up.. . . .   So how is your garden doing?

As you see I made simple, simple tags using Stampin’ Up! punches.  The tops were also done with punches and stamped with “Delishously Made for You” from the Stamp set “Creatively Yours”.

I must get back in the kitchen.

May your kitchen be over flowing with goodness.

Until my next post. . . . .  . .

Stampin’ Up! Holiday Set Sneak Peek

I’m really on a roll today.  I just received my pre-order from the Stampin’ Up! Holiday Mini Catalog and could not wait to start stamping away.  I do have a tutorial for this card, but I will have to wait until after the release of the catalog on September 1, 2011 to put it up on the blog.

One of the most fun things about being a Stampin’ Up! Demonstrator is getting the products before the general public gets them.   I’m so very impatient and I want it all and want it all now, so getting the products early and better yet, at a discount really rocks!

If you are interested in learning more about becoming a Stampin’ Up! Demonstrator, please contact me 937-344-1312 or mzindorf@aim.com.  I would love to talk to you about how Stampin’ Up can fit into your life, whether you just want the product discount or if you want to start your own business.   Doing what you love is awesome!  Besides, my Stampin’ Up! Ink to Art Team would love to welcome you on board.

I asked my last workshop students what they would like to see me create next.  One suggestion was a fall scene.   Well here you go!

Supplies for this project:

Stamps:   Stampin’ Up! Lovely as a Tree (current set), Calendar Alphabet & Numbers (Current) and Out on a Limb (not released yet)

Paper:  Stampin’ Up! Well Worn Designer Series Paper, Basic Black and Whisper White card stock

Ink:  Stampin’ Up! Basic Black, Island Indigo, Baja Breeze

Accessories:  Stampin’ Up Chip Board numbers, Brayer, Sponges, Basic Black marker, White Gel Pen, Post it notes

May your day be filled with Surprises!

Brayered Marina Mist ink on a 3.5″ x 5″ piece of Whisper White card stock.

Brayrered Night of Navy ink at the top of the card stock.

Stamped the Stampin’ Up! Sail Away stamp using Night of Navy ink.

Colored the sails in with Marina Mist marker.   Added Pacific Point marker to the darker areas of the sails and the actual boat.

Darkened the edge of the sale and bottom of the boat with a Night of Navy marker.  Colored over the sails with the Marina Mist marker to blend the colors.

Quickly dried the card stock using my heat gun.

Punched a circle from a post it note using a 1 3/4″ circle punch.  Used the post it note as a mask.

Sponged Whisper White ink in the circle to create my moon.  Sponged the ink darker at the top of the moon.

Removed the mask and added Basic Black ink to the right edges of the sails, bottom of the boat  and the flag.

Ripped a jagged edge in a post it note and used it to create the waves in the water.   Sponged Whisper White ink at the post it note edge.  Moved the post it note and repeated a few times.

Added white gel pen highlights to the sails, boat and waves.

Used Harlequin texture plate and my big shot machine to texturize a 4.75″ x 6.25″ piece of Crumb Cake card stock.

Brayered Crumb Cake ink over the textured card stock to bring out the design more.

Stamped the stamp from the Stampin’ Up! set The Open Sea using Basic Black ink on Whisper White card stock.

Colored the image using a Marina Mist marker and Crumb Cake marker.  Punched the image out using a 1″ circle punch.

Punched a Postage punch out of Crumb Cake card stock and a Label punch out of Basic Black card stock.

Assembled my card by adding a 5″ x 6.5″ piece of Basic Black, 3 5/8″ x 5 1/8 piece of Pacific Point card stock, 3 5/8″ x 5 1/8″ Basic Black card stock, Marina Mist Ribbon, 4 Silver Brads and 1 mini silver brad.  Also added 2 Basic Black card stock photo corners (sorry the photo corner punch recently retired).

Here is the finished card measuring 5″ x 6.5″.

May your day be one of peace and pleasure.

Until my next post. . . . . .

Stamped the polar bear from the Stampin’ Up! set Zoo Review on a 3.75″ x 5.25″ piece of Whisper White card stock by first loading my stamp with Versamark and then with Basic Black ink before stamping it.  Note:   you can use Basic Black Craft ink for this step also.

Heat embossed the image using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

Added River Rock marker to the shadow areas of the bear.

Colored over the bear with a Versamark marker and then heat embossed the image using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.  Note:   Your image should be glassy looking.

Ripped a couple of post it notes and used them to mask my snow area.

Brayered So Saffron ink at an angle at the bottom of the unmasked area.

Brayered Pumpkin Pie ink at an angle, not covering the So Saffron ink entirely.

Using a paper towel, gently wiped the ink off of my embossed bear.  Note:   This should be done after each color that you brayer on.

Brayered Marina Mist ink at the top of the card stock at an angle.

Brayered Pacific Point ink at an angle at the top of the card stock, not covering the Marina Mist ink entirely.

Brayered Night of Navy ink at the top left hand corner at an angle.

Removed the snow masks and ripped a couple of clear post it notes and masked my first hills in the snow.

Sponged Marina Mist ink at the post it note edges.

Removed the post it note masks and added a new straight edged mask to cover the bear.  Sponged Marina Mist ink at the post it note edge to create a shadow for the bear.

Removed the mask, reused the ripped post it note mask to create some hills at the bottom of the card stock.  Sponged Marina mist ink at the post it note edges.

Stamped the flourish from the Stampin’ Up! set Season of Joy a couple of times using Marina Mist ink.  Wiped the ink off of the bear using a paper towel.

Stamped some snowflakes from the Stampin’ Up! set Serene Snowflakes using Whisper White ink.   Note:  be sure that your sky is completely dry before stamping the snowflakes or the White ink will take on the sky colors.

Added White Gel pen to the flourishs and snowflakes to give them more depth.

Punched a Note Quite Navy Decorative Label and cut it in half.

Added the Decorative label halfs, a Pumkin Pie Panel, Marina Mist Panel, Not Quite Navy panel and 4 silver brads.

Here is the finished card measuring 5″ x 6.5″.

May your day be totally Kool.

Until my next post. . . .  .

Hugs,

Michelle
