This and That – Chicken Talk

Lucas says “what, we still have chickens?”
In the extreme below zero weather we have had of late the girls have been all locked up in their coop/condo with their heat lamps, water warmer, food, chicken grit, ouster shells and oatmeal with raisins in the morning served on a silver platter, well not really the silver platter, but the rest yeah.
But today the temps have risen and the path that my wonderful husband, Russ made for me to walk out to the coop on thawed out enough for the girls to get some fresh air, and do what chickens love to do most, peck and scratch.
Lucas tends to stay on the path also.
This is on of the chicks we got last August, all grown up.  Her name is Sugar and she is as sweet as sugar for sure.  This chicken would jump right into my arms if she could every time she saw me.  Instead she pulls on my pant leg until I bend down and pick her up.  She thinks she should be carried around while I’m outside.
She is the one I have been most concerned about since she has the largest comb (red thing on her head) out of my flock.   Their combs get frost bite in extreme temps, especially if there is moister around.  But she doesn’t have a black spot on it so we fared pretty well the past couple of weeks.

It’s a Hot Oatmeal Type of Morning – at the Coop

Shankies! It’s cold out there!

Here in my neck of the woods (Ohio) it is an icy  7 degrees.  This makes taking care of the girls a little more difficult.

We have 8 inches of snow that shows no sign of leaving any time soon, so I have to keep an area in the chicken run shoveled off so the girls can come out of the coop to get some fresh air and eat and drink.  Most of the their time is spent in the coop.

Their water container freezes really quickly in these temperatures so it is now sitting on a special made electric warmer to keep it just above freezing.  Also, I give them hot oatmeal and raisins in the morning to warm their little bodies up and cracked corn just before bed to help keep them warm at night.  Yes, they are spoiled for sure.

Some of the girls have large combs (the red thing on top of their heads, lol) which can get frost bite.  To keep this from happening I put vasoline on their combs to protect them.

I now have a light in their coop that I trudge out to every single morning at 5 am to turn on so they are not in total darkness for too long in the short days we have in the winter.

This is Pearl showing you how chickens in Ohio stand in the Winter.  Nope, she is not one legged.  She is standing on one leg keeping the other tucked in her feathers to keep it warm.   Now that’s talent and it’s Pearl’s very first Winter.  Ya gotta catch on fast here.  By the way, the chicks are 16 weeks old and are just about the same size as the older girls.  I’ve got to quit calling them chicks, they are now Pullets.  A Pullet is a chicken that is almost laying age, but hasn’t laid yet.

All and all the girls try really hard to stay out of the snow, but I love their little prints when they do venture out.

I hope you are staying snug and warm in your neck of the woods.  I think I might have to bake cookies today while I drink hot chocolate.  Life is rough some times.

Until my next post. . . . . .
Huge Hugs!

On another note. . . .
I’m  feeling a bit sad today.  My little Hope (shown on left) lost her battle last night. I have mixed feelings about her passing, glad she is not suffering, but sad none the least. Hope, if you recall is our chick that had a muscular deformity in her crop so she could not process food like the other chicks.  At the end she was only about a quarter the size of what she should have been.  We let her live her life out and I’m so glad she went in her sleep. The Vet told me she would only live a few weeks, but little Hope lived 15 weeks, such a fighter!
She will be missed, such a sweet little chick.

At the Coop

Hey There,

I spent some time yesterday hanging out with the girls.  The babies have adjusted well to the big coop and living with the big girls.   I think the most important thing that they have learned is STAY THE HECK AWAY FROM THE BIG CHICKENS or you will get pecked.

There has been lots of exploring going on, like little Sugar here introducing herself to the cement goose.  I’m still not convenience that she knows it is not alive.

Red is doing great although she lost almost all of her feathers during her molting process and still looks a bit deranged.  She is now covered in little new feathers and it appears she will be more white than red when all of her feathers are grown out.  The other girls have been keeping her warm at night, very sweet.

Luke is being so very patient with the chickens.  This is Bunny trying to take his milk bone.  I think any other dog would have Bunny for a snack, but not Luke.   He lets the chickens peck at the milk bone and then he eats it.

Now let me introduce you to Hope.  She is the little Easter Egger chicken on the left.  The chicken on the right is her buddy Goldie.  They are the same age and should be the same size.

I haven’t talked much about Hope because we didn’t think she was going to live very long.  Not long after we got her we noticed she had an extended crop (chest).  Me being the sap I am, took Hope to the Vet’s office.  Now walking into a country Vet office with a chick gets people laughing in a farm community.  Mainly, because if there is a problem with poultry you do away with the problem not shell out $20 to have the vet look over a $2 chick.

The Vet, which I love, held back his laughter long enough to tell me that she has a birth defect.  Her crop has not developed properly and she will not live very long because she is not getting the nutrition she needs.  After hearing this glum report I decided to let Hope live out her days anyway since she was eating and running and doing all the things the other chicks were doing, but I was trying not to become to attached, yeah right.

That was 5 weeks ago and Hope is still being her chicken self and doing everything all the other chickens are doing she just is not growing at the rate they are.  She is now half the size that she should be, but is enjoying life.

So here’s to Hope the chick that is not giving up or being given up on.

On a lighter note, here are some other activities in the chicken run.  How about finding a faster way to the chicken feed and you don’t have to worry about the big girls pecking you.  Pearl figured this method of chowing out.

Lots of preening going on.  They are keeping those new adult feathers clean and beautiful.

Napping in a pile is a perfect way to spend the afternoon.  I think we should learn a thing or two from them, especially the afternoon nap thing, maybe not in a pile though.  🙂

Well that’s all for today from the coop.

May your day be super wonderful!
Until my next post. . . . . .

I’m Molting!! Chicken Update and New Stampin’ Up Promotions

NHello There,
It’s crazy around the coop these days.   A ton of feathers are being lost.   It really scared me when I went out to the chicken run to find feathers lying all over the ground.  I quickly did a head count to make sure no one was eaten, that’s how many feathers were everywhere.
Red’s molting transformation. . . . .
Believe it or not, my Speckled Sussex, Red went from her beautiful feathered self in the picture on the left to this very naked girl on the right.  This process happened in 2 days!  She now has prickly new feathers coming out all over her body.   All I want to do is pick her up and comfort her, but you are not supposed to handle them since molting is a painful process.  If you have never heard of molting before, chickens do it every Fall.  They lose feathers and grow new ones.   They were young chickens last Fall so we only seen a little feather loss.  Believe me, nothing to this extreme.
Close up of Red’s chest and the prickly new feathers poking out.  Yikes!  When the feathers grow out they look like a quill end that has a wax tip.  The chicken will chew the wax tip off and the feather will fluff out.  I’m so glad I don’t have feathers, lol.
I am feeding the flock some protein (scrambled eggs etc.) to help them with the molting process.   Bunny is molting too (shown next to Red) but not nearly as bad as Red.  Molting is different for different chicken breeds, from what I understand.
All I know it sure is an adventure being a chicken owner.  Seems I learn something new about them every day.
On another note, today Russ is having surgery to take the heart monitor out of his chest, whoohoo!  He is doing so well.   Please send healing thoughts his way.  🙂  Also, if you like chickens send some also Red’s way, lol.

Oh No, Another Chick Update

Hello there,
I arrived in St. George, Utah yesterday for Founder’s Circle so I set this post to automatically update while I am away.
Here is a little chick update for you as you can see, the chicks are growing leaps and bounds.  These three white chicks are going to be trouble.  I’m sure they are hatching their escape plan as I took this photo.
They have all gotten so big, they have graduated from the plastic brooder tub I was using to Luke’s old dog crate.  I had to make shift some sort of walls to keep the chicks from slipping between the bars so that’s the cardboard and newspapers that you see in the pics.  Hey, it isn’t fancy but it works and I recycled.  🙂
Someone asked to see a picture of the 2 Black chicks.  Well, one is still black but the other is turning brown with black dots.
The one that is still black is a bit camera shy.  She likes to hide behind the water container when the camera is pointing at her.
They are now 3 1/2 weeks old and have lots and lots of feathers, but still have a little down left on their heads.
I have a request, everyone please keep Russ in your thoughts while I am traveling.  He has to take care of the hens, chicks and Luke, aka the zoo.  🙂

***********************************

Enjoy your day!
Until my next post. . . . . .
Huge Hugs!

My Chicks Arrived

Good morning!

I have a quick post this morning.  I got the call from my little post office here in town a little after 6:00 a.m. asking me to come pick up my peeping box.  Since the post office isn’t open I had to go to the back door and they handed them off to me.

I order my chicks from Mypetchicken.com.  Great place to work with to get the breeds you desire along with having them sexed and vaccinated.  All my chicks are female.

They arrive in this box.

Believe me they are peeping loud!

They ship day old chicks.  It’s a little scary opening the box.  I’m always afraid that there may be a bad surprise.  But both times I received my chicks they are in great shape.  It’s hard to tell, but there are 6 chicks.  I got 4 Marans, 1 Easter Egger and 1 Leghorn.   I purchased the Marans as a collection so I don’t know exactly what kind of Marans they are until they get their adult feathers.

Now don’t laugh at my fancy chick brooder set up, lol.  Yes, they are in my house while they are very little.  You have to control the temperature and check on their water/food constantly.  The light is red so they don’t peck each other.  Not sure the reasoning behind that, but I do what I’m told.  Doesn’t make for great pictures and I don’t want to handle them a great deal today.

Any how, I’m sure I will take more pictures of the chicks as they learn to stamp like the last group, lol.

I’m off to actually create a stamping project if I can pull myself away from the chicks.  They are too stinking cute!

Hugs!

Michelle

Chick Talk

I haven’t been able to go out and chat with my favorite friends much since we have had snow on the ground and they have been cooped up in their run.  So today as the snow was melting I let the girls out for a bit while I sat on the deck step, the only dry surface around.

Well anytime you get down to the girls level they think it is time to have a talk with you.  Here they come.

I started by complaining that I needed a manicure.  The girls really are the only ones that will listen to me complain, lol.   At least I  had Buffy’s attention.

Red says “let me see” and her and Buffy check out my hands and then try to snatch the camera strap off of my wrist.  It does kinda look like a worm, so I’ll give them that one.

They then helped me decide whether to forgo a manicure today by showing me their nails.

Hey, I think I’m good for another week or two before I need to get mine done.  Talking to them about such things could just save me some dough.  . . . . . .

Huge Hugs and clucks!
