Salsa and Tag Tutorial #527

Tomatoes, onions and Peppers, OH MY!

Well what do you do when you have these veggies coming out of the garden in basketful’s?  You make salsa, that’s what.     Some people may think I am crazy for vegetable gardening and canning the things that I grow in my garden instead of picking them up off of the grocery store shelf.  Let me tell you, I know exactly what’s in my canned goods.  No pesticides or preservatives, low salt etc., etc.   Also, there is nothing better than to sit down to a meal and say I grew this and canned it.   Not to mention the taste is 100 times better than store bought.   So for all those reasons, I love to can!

The next best thing to growing your own is to pick up the veggies at your  local famers market or grocery store.

One more thing I love about canning is decorating the jars, grin.  People love to get these special jars as gifts.  Stampin’ Up has made it so easy to make that jar extra wonderful with their new Friendship Preserves stamp set and coordinating Window Frames Framelits Dies and Festive Paper Piercing Pack.  Check it out below.

Here are a few Stampin’ Up Reminders before I start the project.

My photos are a bit wacky today.  Bare with me.  I found it is not a good idea to take a photo of a boiling pot of water with steam coming up off of it steaming up your lens, lol.   You all probably new that, but I came from the school of hard knocks so I had to learn it the hard way.

If you have never canned before, I suggest you get a book on canning to get the basics down.

Ingredients:

1 cup distilled white vinegar

1/4 cup sugar

1 tablespoon salt

3 pounds tomatoes, seeded and diced

1/2 pound onions, finely diced

1-2 jalapeno peppers, finely diced

1 cup chopped fresh cilantro (optional)

Note:  I have doubled this recipe today.  The list above is for one batch that makes 7 cups.

I started making my salsa by washing and blanching my tomatoes.

I blanched them by putting them in boiling water for 1-2 minutes to get the skin to split.  At that point, take them out and put them in ice water to cool them down.  You are not trying to cook them just killing the bacteria on them and to get the skin to loosen up.

Take them out of the ice water and drain in a colander.

The skins will now slide right off of the tomatoes.  So skin them and core them with a paring knife.  I save the skin and core to add to my compost pile, now that’s a whole different topic.

Once they have been skinned and cored slice it down the middle and remove the seeds by squeezing it.  I do this over a separate bowl to catch the seeds and juice.

I didn’t want to waste the tomato juice so I strained it through a cheese cloth and saved it for breakfast tomorrow.  To yummy to through out.

I chopped all of the tomatoes, onions and peppers I needed for the salsa.  My food processor is a great help for the onion and peppers.

Prepared my jars and lids by boiling them.

Put the vinegar, sugar and salt in a non reactive pan and brought it to a boil.

Added my tomatoes, onions and peppers and brought them back to a boil for 5 minutes.

Added the cilantro and took the pan off of the heat.

Filled my jars, wiped off the rim of the jars, put on my tops and screw bands.  Hand tightened them and put them in my canner for 15 minutes.

After 15 minutes in the canner, take the pot off of the burner and take the lid off.  Leave the jars in the water for 5 more minutes.

Remove the jars from the canner and put them on a towel on your counter.  Listen for the jars to ping.  This is an indication that they sealed properly.  🙂  You now have SALSA.  Where are the chips!

Now for the tags:

Stamped the Yum stamp using Real Red ink on Whisper White card stock.

Colored the leaves in with an Old Olive marker.

Using the Window Frames Collection Framelits, cut out the yum stamped image.  Using the next size die cut out an Old Olive piece to go under my main tag.   Also cut out the smallest die using Whisper White card stock.

Pierced around the edge of the Old Olive piece using the coordinating Festive Paper Piercing Pack and piercing tool.

Hand wrote Salsa and the date on the small Whisper White piece and sponged Old Olive ink around the edge.

Punched circles from Real Red card stock using the 1 3/4″ circle punch.   Adhered the salsa piece to it.

Adhered the yum tag to the Old Olive piece and then to a 1″ strip of Stampin’ Up designer series paper.  I used sticky strip to adhere the tag to the DSP strip so the tag would lay flat when wrapped around the jar.  Adhered the strip around the jar using a few glue dots so it didn’t slide around.   Also added the Salsa tag to the top of the jar.  People need to know what’s in the jar, right?

There are my salsa jars all ready to be eaten or gifted.

I hope you liked today’s tutorial.  It made me hungry.  I think I need to find those chips now.

Until my next post. . . . .

Punched a 1 3/4″ circle from the stick part of a post it note and used it as a mask for the moon on a 2.75″ x 6″ piece of Whisper White card stock.

Brayered Bashful Blue, Island Indigo and Elegant Eggplant in that order at the top of the card stock.

Removed the moon mask and sponged So Saffron ink in the middle of the moon.

Stamped the house using Stazon Jet Black ink.

Sponged the hill in using Old Olive ink leaving the bottom of the card stock white.

Stamped the fence by loading the stamp with a Basic Black marker and then huffing on the stamp to moisten before stamping it.

Colored in just the fence of the fence stamp and stamped it so the fence continued.  Repeated on the other side.

Stamped the Sentiment in the moon using Stazon Jet Black ink.

Added a path to the house using an Old Olive marker.

Sponged Old Olive ink at the bottom of the card stock.

Cut a 4.75″ x 6.25″ piece of Designer Series paper and added 2 Elegant eggplant panels.

Stamped the mummy and the trick or treat bag using Stazon Jet Black ink on Whisper White card stock and cut them out.

Ripped a piece of Old Olive card stock for grass and sponged Basic Black ink at the bottom edge.

Adhered the grass card stock, mummy, trick or treat bag using Stampin’ Dimensionals.  Added a Googlies Eye to the mummy (super cute) and added a handle to the trick or treat bag using a Basic Black marker.  Also added to Old Olive Glimmer Brads.

Here is the finished card measuring 5″ x 6.5″.   Makes me want to go out and get some candy, lol.

I’m a little late posting today.  I’ve been busy in the kitchen doing some more freezer meal stuff.

Yesterday I got 6 lbs of ground turkey, 1 lb of cheddar cheese and 3 lbs of hamburger on sale.

So with my bargains I made the following:

50 Breakfast Burritos:

First, I made my ground turkey into turkey sausage.  Here is a link to the recipe I used CLICK HERE.  I tripled the recipe.

Then I made my breakfast burritos.   Turkey sausage, 24 eggs and 2 Tablespoons of Milk scrambled, 1 lb cheddar cheese shredded in food processor, 50 flour tortillas and large jar of salsa (I used home made salsa).  These were put together and par-frozen on cookie sheets and then transfered into freezer bags and back in the freezer.  To use, all you need to do is take one out and wrap it in a paper towel and microwave 1.3 minutes.  Super fast breakfast.

The 3 lbs of hamburger was browned along with some onion and bell peppers.   It was then drained and divided up into 3 freezer baggies.  Now I have meat all ready to add to spaghetti sauce or used in casseroles.

Love when I can take advantage of a sale.

May your day be filled with fun and excitement!

Until my next post. . . . .

Stamped the En Francais stamp using Soft Suede ink.

Sponged Soft Suede ink around the edge of the card stock.

Quilted Coasters – Tutorial #524

Single quilted coaster

Hey There,

Today’s tutorial on quilted coasters involved getting out the sewing machine, but know if you can sew a straight line you will have no problem making these quick quilted coasters.   They are super yummy looking using Stampin’ Up! fabrics, some of which are a sneak peek of what is to come in the new Stampin’ Up! Holiday Mini Catalog that starts on August 1, 2012.  But for now, know you will want everything in the mini.  It is so filled with fresh new stamps and embellishments, watch out!

Below is a sample of some of my Stampin’ Up! fabrics that can be found in the annual catalog.  I love the way the fabric matches all the great Stampin’ Up! colors we have come to love in the paper, ink, markers etc., etc.

Here are a few Stampin’ Up Reminders before I start the project.   During the month of July, with any $50 purchase, you can get this beautiful stamp set for $5.

Don’t miss out on my Customer free stamp set program. Check it out!  Along with a handmade thank you card from me for your order you will receive a token for each $50 in product you ordered using me as your demonstrator.  After you have collected 10 tokens you will receive a free current stamp set of your choosing, a value of $39 or less.   Here is a link to my online shopping page that you can shop at 24/7 (from the comfort of your home, even in your pj’s) and the products will be shipped directly to your door step from Stampin’ Up:   CLICK HERE TO SHOP.   My free stamp set program will be an on going program.  :)

Now on with today’s tutorial. . . . .  . .

Start by cutting a piece of fabric 4.5″ x 10″.  You will need one of these for each coaster you make.

Cut a piece of batting 4″ square.  You will need one of these for each coaster.

Fold the fabric in half, front sides facing each other, and stitch the right and left sides closed using a 1/4″ seam allowance.   Now you have a pocket.

Now here is just a little tip if you are going to make a bunch of these.  Sew one side on each coaster, running them through your machine one right after each other without cutting the thread.  Flip them over and sew the other sides together and then cut them apart.  (clear as mud?)

Clip your bottom corners.

Turn the piece right side out and use your bone folder or a crochet hook to get the corners to be square.

Tuck the 4″ square batting smoothly in the pocket.

Turn the top edges under having one edge cover the batting.

Sew the open end closed using a 1/4″ seam allowance to 1/4″ of the end of the fabric.  With your needle down, turn the fabric so you are sewing down the next side, keep sewing around and around having a 1/4″ allowance from the previous row of stitches.

End your sewing in the middle and make a few back stitches.

I put together stacks of 6 coasters using ribbon and adding a tag for each stack.

Here is a couple of sneak peeks for you.  This set of coasters uses Stampin’ Up! Holiday Mini Catalog Orchard Harvest Designer Fabric and Perfectly Preserved Stamp set.

Another Mini Catalog Sneak Peak:

This set show cases the Stampin’ Up! Holiday Mini products, Candlelight Christmas Designer Fabric and Scentsational Season Stamp set.

The other 3 coaster sets I made today showcase the Comfort Cafe fabric from the Annual Catalog and Affection Collection Stamp Set from the Holiday Mini.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and find yourself dusting off that sewing machine to make some of these as quick house warming gifts or just some for yourself.  I think you will be surprised at how fast they whip up.

May your day be overflowing with all the people you love.

Until my next post. . . .  ..

Birdie in the Window – Tutorial #523

Hey There,

Boy it feels good to be in my craft room creating today.   It has been dark and gloomy and storming all day here so how about a card that has blue skies.  This cheered me up and kept me from crawling back in bed.

The Stampin’ Up! set Cottage Window made quick work of this card.  The set can be used for any season, very versatile.  Item number 127282.

I got my new Stampin’ Up! ink pads in.  Stamping and brayering with these pads are a dream, they are fabulous!  If you would like some info on the new pads just watch this video from Shannon West at Stampin’ Up’s Corporate Office.  Shannon does an excellent job at explaining what the new ink pads are like so I will not waste the time to re-hash it here. Also, there are 3 sneak peek Stampin’ Up! Holiday Mini Catalog products used on this card.   The holiday mini catalog will be out August 1, 2012.   Woohoo!  So write these products down because you will definitely want to add them to your list of must haves.

Card Stock: Stampin’ Up! Whisper White, Calypso Coral and Old Olive

Ink: Stampin’ Up! Re-inkers (Calypso Coral, Lucky Limeade and Tangerine Tango), Stazon Jet Black

Put shaving cream in a plastic container or on a paper plate.

Drop a few dots of re-inkers in the shaving cream.  I used Calypso Coral, Tangerine Tango and Lucky Limeade.

I used the wood end of a paint brush to swirl the colors around.  Be sure not to mix to much or the colors will muddy.

Put your Whisper White card stock down into the shaving cream and press just a bit so that the paper comes in contact with the color.   Lift the card stock out.  It will look like this, YIKES!

If you want another background, but lighter in color put another piece of card stock over the first one so the shaving cream is sandwiched in between the two pieces of card stock.

Pull them apart and wipe the shaving cream off of the card stock with a paper towel.

The light piece on the far left is the piece I put on top of the 1st one.  See how much lighter it is.

If you continue to use the shaving cream with additional pieces of card stock the colors will mix more and more (like the ones on the far right).

Cut the card stock using the big shot machine and the NEW FRAMLITS WINDOW FRAMES COLLECTION die cut.  Also cut the next size up using Lucky Limeade card stock.

Stamped the humming bird and the flourish using Stazon Jet Black ink.

Used the NEW STAMPIN’ DAZZLE Silver marker around the edge of the two die cuts.

Used the NEW LACY BROCADE Embossing Folder on a 4.25″ piece of Whisper White card stock.

Added a 5.5″ square Lucky Limeade card base and a 4 3/8″ square Calypso Coral panel.

Added some Whisper White Organza Ribbon and popped the die cuts up with Stampin’ Dimensionals.

Here is the finished card measuring 5.5″ square.

I’m a little late posting today.  I was busy in the kitchen putting up some mashed potatoes.

When I find bags of potatoes on sale really cheap, I cannot resist buying them in order to freeze mashed potatoes.  All you have to do is peel, boil and make your regular mashed potato recipe and then freeze either in quart bags or food saver bags.  I can’t live without my food saver.

If you didn’t know, I love to make at least 4 of something that I am cooking.  That way we get to freeze 3.

I got 8 batches of mashed potatoes out of 10 lbs of potatoes with only a little more time than it would have took me to make one batch.  Great side to be able to pull out of the freezer and quickly heat.

Also, when you make your own dishes to freeze you know just what went into them.  No preservatives!!!

Well I’m going to be on the road for over a week.  I’m heading to Lawrence, Kansas tomorrow to teach this weekend and then I’m off to Stampin’ Up’s convention in Salt Lake City, Utah.   Hang tight and check out some of my past tutorials while I’m gone.  Better yet, how about making some cards using the tutorials.   Either way, thank you for hanging out with me here on my blog.   I hope you find yourself inspired.

Until my next post. . . . . .  .

Stamp the pumpkins using More Mustard ink on Stampin’ Up! Watercolor paper.

Stamped the witch using Stazon Jet Black ink on the watercolor paper.

Colored the pumpkin by adding a bit of More Mustard marker at the bottom of the pumpkin and then used a blender pen to more the color up to the top of the pumpkin a little at a time.

Stamped the stems on the pumpkin using Basic Black ink.

Added More Mustard marker to the bottom of the pumpkins and used the Blender pen to blend the color.   Be sure to just lay a bit of the marker down at a time.  Blend it before adding more.

Added a touch of Basic Black to her hat and cap and then blended it with the Blender pen.

Added Blush Blossom marker to her skin and blended it with the Blender Pen.

Added a bit of Wisteria Wonder marker to her dress and shoes and blended it with the Blender pen.

Colored her hair and the hat buckle and the broom straw using Daffodil Delight marker.   Colored the rest of the broom in using a Soft Suede marker.

Cut out the pumpkins and the witch using Stampin’ Up! Paper Snips.

Now for the background.  Cut a 4.5″ x 6″ piece of Whisper White card stock.  Punched a 1 3/4″ circle punch from a Post it note and used it as a mask for the moon.

Brayered Tempting Turquoise and Rich Razzelberry ink at the top of the card stock.

Sponged Old Olive ink at the bottom of the card stock, making a hill.

Removed mask and adhered the witch to the card stock and added an Old Olive marker shadow below the pumpkin and broom.

Stamped the Everything Eleanor Flourish using Stazon Jet Black ink twice.

Sponged Always Artichoke and Black ink at the bottom of the card stock.

Zebra Reflection – Tutorial #520

Hey There,

Whew!  Did that weekend ever go by quickly.   I feel like I spent the entire weekend picking up branches brought down by the thunder storm that rolled through with it’s 70 mile an hour winds and just generally trying to keep the dog, chickens and myself cool during this blasted heat wave.   Someone, please turn off the heat!

My project today is a hot one, using warm colors and the very fun Stampin’ Up set, Zoo Review.   This is an old workshop project of mine.   I usually don’t share my workshop projects here on my blog, in fact this is the first time I have.    This is one of my favorites and I’m no longer teaching this card so here it is.      You wouldn’t believe the stash of old workshop projects I have piled up.  I change the projects in my workshops frequently to keep the workshops fresh.   Maybe little by little I’ll share them here.

The tutorial that follows will show you how to get that reflection in the water for the zebra and for the mountains.  Hope you enjoy it.  If you do, let me hear from you.   I love reading your comments, suggestions and general chit chat.

Other card tutorials using the Zoo Review stamp set:

Now on with today’s tutorial. . . . .  . .

Supplies:

Stamps: Stampin’ Up! Zoo Review

Card Stock: Stampin’ Up! Whisper White, Basic Black and Old Olive

Ink: Stampin’ Up! Old Olive, More Mustard, Cajun Craze, Cherry Cobbler, Basic Black and Soft Suede

Accessories: Stampin’ Up! Sponges, Versamarker, Versamark Pad, Sahara Sand Marker, 4 Silver Brads, Decorative Label Punch, White Gel Pen, 1/2″ circle Punch, post it notes, Brayer, Clear Embossing Powder, Heat Gun and Heavy Window Sheet.

Are you getting inspiration from this blog?   One way you can help support it is to order your Stampin’ Up products through me.   Click HERE to place an order and have your order delivered directly to your door step from Stampin’ Up!

Loaded the Zebra stamp with Versamark and then Basic Black ink before stamping it on a 3.5″ x 6.5″ piece of Whisper White card stock.  Heat embossed the image using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

Colored the dark stripes in with a Sahara Sand marker.

Colored over the zebra using a Versamarker and then heat embossed the image using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.  Now you image should be completely covered with embossing and will look like glass.

Brayer More Mustard ink at the top and bottom of the card stock.

Punch a 1/2″ circle from a post it note and use it as the mask for your sun.

Brayer Cajun Craze ink at the top and bottom of the card stock.

Brayer Cherry Cobbler ink at the very top and bottom of the card stock.

Stamp the zebra with Basic Black ink on a clear window sheet and then quickly turn it over onto the card stock (be sure to line up the zebra’s feet) and then brayer over the clear plastic sheet to transfer the zebra.   This creates the reflection.

Now to create the mountains:  Take two post it notes and stick the sticky sides together, so the sticky is sticking to the other sticky (back to back).  This way when you tear the post it note to mask for the mountains you will have one for the top and one for the reflection.

Put the post it notes on the card stock.  Make sure the post it notes and the same distance from each of the zebras.

Sponge Cajun Craze ink in for the mountains on both the top and bottom.

Take the masks off and put a straight post it note between the zebras.  Sponge Soft Suede ink and Old Olive ink at the post it note edge.  Then flip the post it note around and sponge the ground in on the reflective side (Soft Suede and Old Olive).  A little lighter on the reflective side.

Remove the mask and added White Gel Pen water lines to add some sparkle.

Sponge Basic Black ink around the edge of the card stock.

Punch a Decorative Label Punch from Basic Black card stock and cut it in half.

Add a 3.75″ x 8″ Basic Black panel and a 4″ x 9″ Old Olive Panel.  Add the two halves of the label and 4 silver brads.   Also add a 8″ x 9″ Whisper White Panel folded in half as the card base.

Here is the completed card.

May your day be one of pure delight!

Embossed Ornaments – Tutorial #519

Hey There,

Are you stuck in the United States heat wave?   We are expecting temps to reach 105 degrees for the next couple of days here.  Now, I know that isn’t extremely hot for some of you in the USA, but it’s unusual here in Ohio in June.

I’m just trying to keep cool by thinking of Christmas.  So hence, the Christmas card project today.   Besides, I now have 2 Christmas cards done for this year, lol.

I think I have lost my mind.  I’ve been running the oven kicking out some Blueberry Zucchini Bread.   I’ll give the recipe for those of you who are interested at the end of this post.   It’s yummy!  Already, my garden is producing more veggies than Russ and I can eat, so I’m trying to do some baking and canning to stay ahead of the game.  This Blueberry Zucchini Bread is super moist and freezes well.

Here are a few Stampin’ Up Reminders before I start the project.

Supplies:

Card Stock: Stampin’ Up! Whisper White, Cherry Cobbler and Baja Breeze

Ink: Stampin’ Up! Baja Breeze, Island Indigo, Midnight Muse, Cherry Cobbler and Gold

Accessories: Stampin’ Up! Sponge Daubers, Versamark Pad, Versamarker, Clear Embossing Powder, Heat Gun, Stampin Dimensionals, Framelits – Apothecary Accents, Big Shot Machine, Baja Breeze Seam Binding, Stampin’ Markers – Pink Pirouette and Cherry Cobbler, Prismacolor Gold Marker.

Gotta love these new Framelits from Stampin’ Up!  This set is the Apothecary Accents (item number 127003).  I used the large one on the right.

Die cut it using Whisper White card stock and the Big Shot Machine.

You won’t be able to tell what I stamp here until I start putting in the background color.   Take my word for it, lol.

Stamped Snowflakes at the top of the card stock using Versamark.   Embossed the images using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

Stamped the Ornaments using Gold ink.  Heat embossed the image using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

Colored the images in entirely using a Pink Pirouette marker.  Added Shading by adding Cherry Cobbler marker to the outside of the area and then blended it using the Pink Pirouette marker.   I left it light in the middle of the ornaments to give it a rounded look.

Heated the ornaments quickly to set the marker.

Colored over the ornaments (stay inside of the gold embossed image) using a Versamarker.   Embossed the entire image using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.  Now all the images are covered with embossing powder and will resist the background colors I will be putting on next.

Sponged Baja Breeze ink on the inside of the card stock and at the top.

Sponged Island Indigo ink around the edges of the card stock, leaving the middle of the card stock light.

Sponged Midnight Muse at the top of the card stock.

Softly wiped the embossed images off with a paper towel.

Cut a 4.75″ x 6.25″ panel of Cherry Cobbler.   Stamped a snowflake all over the card stock using Cherry Cobbler ink.

Added a 5″ x 6.5″ Baja Breeze Panel, 3″ x 5″ Cherry Cobbler Panel and a 3.25″ x 5.25″ Baja Breeze Panel.

Edged all of the panels with a Prismacolor Gold Marker.   To edge the card stock, put the marker tip 1/2 on the card stock and 1/2 on your scrap paper as you pull the marker along the edge.

Assembled the card adding a 10″ x 6.5″ Whisper White card base folded in half and a Baja Breeze seam binding double bow.

The main image panel and the 2 panels below it are popped up using Stampin’ Dimensionals.

Now about that Blueberry Zucchini Bread. ………….

Ingredients

  • 3 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 1/4 cups white sugar
  • 2 cups shredded zucchini
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 pint fresh blueberries

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease 4 mini-loaf pans.
  2. In a large bowl, beat together the eggs, oil, vanilla, and sugar. Fold in the zucchini. Beat in the flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, and cinnamon. Gently fold in the blueberries. Transfer to the prepared mini-loaf pans.
  3. Bake 50 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a knife inserted in the center of a loaf comes out clean. Cool 20 minutes in pans, then turn out onto wire racks to cool completely.

This recipe is from allrecipes.com.

May you have sunny days and cool breezes.

My heart and thoughts are with those of you that are in the flood areas of Florida or the fire areas of Colorado.  Please be safe.

Until my next post. . . . . .  .
