I woke up this morning with this card rattling around in my head so I started stamping at 5:00 a.m. so I can move on with my day and not forget this idea. But before we get into the tutorial I have a couple of announcements to make.

You Northern Ohio Readers have requested it so here it is, for one day only I will be teaching my brayer workshops in Fairlawn, Ohio near Akron October 10, 2009.

Used my Big Shot and Top Note Die to cut this Top Note out of Whisper White card stock.

I then cut 1.25″ of it off at one end.

Trimmed the outer edge off of both pieces with scissors.

Sponged on Summer Sun ink.

Sponged on Pumpkin Pie ink.

Masked the top of the card stock with a Post it Note.

Sponged Pumpkin Pie ink on the unmasked area.

Sponged Dusty Durango ink (another great new In Color by Stampin’ Up) on the bottom of the card stock, not covering the Pumpkin Pie ink entirely.

Took the Post it note off and turned it around so it is masking the bottom of the card stock and sponged a bit of Chocolate Chip ink at the Post it note edge.

Removed the Post it note and Sponged Dusy Durango on the small piece of card stock and the very top of the larger one.

Sponged Chocolate Chip ink at the bottom of the large piece and top of the small piece of card stock.

Stamped the Asian Artistry flower twice with Chocolate Chip ink.

I have a bunch of these Sakura Souffle pens and this is the first time I have used one in a tutorial, but I bet you will see this again in the future. These pens can be used on dark colored card stock and stand out great! They don’t sink into the card stock put stay raised.

Use the light blue Souffle Sakura pen on the flower portion of the image. It is hard to see it until it dries completely.

Added White gel pen highlights to the foliage.

Cut another Top Note out of Bashful Blue card stock.

Glued the main image panel pieces to the Bashful Blue Top Note and then cut it apart.

Assembled part of the card front and added piercings down the right and left side using the Stampin’ Up Piercing tools and mat kit.

Added White Gel Pen from one piercing whole to the next to create faux stitching.

Added Silver brads and assembled the card the rest of the way. Here it is finished measuring 5.25″ square.

I hope this tutorial has inspired you to create a scene today.

Layered Illusion Floral – Tutorial #230

This card looks like it has many layers, but it only has (2) two, the main image panel and the Blush Blossom Card. Stay a moment with me and I will show you how this was all done.

Started with a 4.75″ square piece of Whisper White card stock and masked the bottom 1″ of it with a post it note.

Stamped the flower twice at first loading my stamp with Versamark, Cameo Coral and tapped a bit of Old Olive on the stem area before stamping the image.

Heat embossed the flowers with clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

Added a bit of Blush Blossom marker to the flower heads.

Colored in the stems and leaves with a Sahara Sand marker.

Colored over the flowers and stems with a Versamark marker and then heat embossed the images with clear embossing powder. If after heating your embossing looks pitted, go over it again with Versamark and clear embossing powder and heat again. This second layer of embossing really protects the images from the ink we will be putting over them.

Yikes, I grabbed my inked up Versamark pad here instead of my clean one, which was my intention. Oh well, gotta stick with it now that I stamped one of the flourishes with it.

Stamped flourished around the entire outside of the card stock with Versamark only.

Heat embossed the flourishes with clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

Sponged Sahara Sand ink all over the card stock.

Masked the center of the cardstock with a post it note.

Sponged Soft Suede ink around all over the unmasked portion of the card stock.

Can I say love this new In Color! I will be getting some mileage out of this pad in the future.

Sponged Chocolate Chip ink around the outside edge of the card stock, not covering the Soft Suede ink entirely.

Unmasked the panel.

Sponged Soft Suede lightly over the edges of the previous masked area to soften them some.

I had a speck of something blue on my card stock so I decided to add the white gel pen dots to hide it. 🙂

Extended the stems down to the masked line with an Old Olive marker.

Added a Shadow on the bottom and left side of the previous mask area to create a shadow using a ruler and a Soft Suede marker. That’s right, for the first time Stampin’ Up has put out markers to match their in colors this year, YEAHHHHHH!

This is a very easy step that adds so much. 🙂

Oops! I see that I missed a photo. I used a Metallic Gold Sharpie Paint marker on the edge of the card stock to make it look like a gold card stock layer.

Adhered the main image panel to the Blush Blossom card. Also added some gold cord. Here it is assembled measuring 5.25″ square.

I hope this tutorial has inspired you to create layers with your images and shadows. Two layer cards are a lot lighter to mail. 🙂 And look at all the card stock you could be saving.

Moon Over Pond – Tutorial #228

My tutorial today shows how to put a moon in the scene using a simple masking technique and White Pigment ink.

On a 3″ x 8″ piece of Whisper White card stock, stamped the flower image three times by loading my stamp first with Versamark and then with Kiwi Kiss ink before stamping each image.

Heat embossed the images using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

Brayered Baja Breeze ink at the top of the card stock.

Brayered Not Quite Navy ink at the top of the card stock, not covering the Baja Breeze ink entirely.

Brayered Really Rust ink at the bottom of the card stock.

Brayered Ruby Red ink at the bottom of the card stock, not covering the Really Rust ink entirely.

Added a dark Green marker shadow to the right sides of the plants.

Added some White gel pen lines at the bottom of the card stock.

Colored in the flower heads with the White Gel Pen.

Use the negative piece of card stock that I cut a 3″ circle out of with a Circle Cutter for a Mask to create my Moon. Sponged White Craft ink (Pigment ink) in the open area of the mask.

Removed the mask and sponged Close to Cocoa at the base of each plant and at the very bottom of the card stock.

Sponged Not Quite Navy ink at the top sides and top edge of the card stock.

Assembled a few simple layers and here is the finished card measuring 4″ x 9″.

Butterfly Season – Tutorial #227

Lounging in the yard last night gave me the inspiration to create a butterfly card. I actually stayed up late last night, midnight to be exact, stamping this. If you know me, you know that is way, way, way out of character for me. I am an early to bed, early to rise person, so that must have been some inspirational force to make me stay up late. I’m such a party animal, lol.

This tutorial is an example of what can be achieved with two layers of card stock. 🙂 I know that 15 layers is the current fad, but it is nice not to have such a heavy card to mail, now and again.

But before we get started I have some blog candy to award in the “Name that Bird” contest. The bird now has a name. It was extremely hard to pick one from all of the entries. First, I made the long list. Then I created the short list. Then I actually had to pick a name and the winner is out of 398 entries.

Drum-roll, please. . . . . . . . .. . .. . . . . . . . . . .. . .. .

Linda who wrote “Obviously, his/her color jumps right out off the page…The shade of blue reminds me of the Carribean…which leads to Buffet and Marley Music…which makes me think “Marley” would be an awesome name! Parrothead might not work, huh!? LOL Of course an Aqua Cosmo if one of my favorite drinks, so “Cosmo” might work too! HA”

On a 4 7/8″ piece of Whisper White card stock, stamped the butterfly by first loading my stamp with Versamark and then Basic Black ink before stamping it in the center of the card stock.

Sorry folks, this Stampin’ Up set is retired and is no longer available, but you can you use any butterfly you have in your stamp collection for this project.

Heat embossed the butterfly using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

Colored the Butterfly in with a Stampin’ Up Apricot Appeal Marker.

Added some More Mustard marker to the butterfly.

Added Pumpkin Pie marker to the center of the butterfly’s wings.

Colored over the butterfly with a Versamark marker and then heat embossed the image using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

Now I keep a pile of old circular mask. This piece of card stock has a 3 1/8″ circle cut out of it.

I placed this over the butterfly image and then drew squiggly lines around the inside of the mask with an Always Artichoke marker.

Removed the mask and sponged So Saffron ink on the card stock in a pouncing motion.

Sponged More Mustard ink on the card stock in a pouncing motion.

Sponged Pumpkin Pie ink on the card stock using a pouncing motion.

Sponged Really Rust ink on in a circular motion.

Stamped side “C” of my Stampendous Marble Texture Cube using Close to Cocoa ink repeatedly until I achieved the look I wanted.

Sponged Close to Cocoa ink on the card stock using a circular motion.

Sponged Basic Black ink around the edge of the card stock using a circular motion.

Sponged More Mustard ink on the inside of the circle using a circular motion and leaving a light ring around it.

Outlined my card stock using a Metallic Gold Sharpie Paint marker, by holding the marker half on the card stock and half off the card stock and pulling straight down. Repeat this for each side of the card stock.

Added my Basic Black panel and some gold brads in the middle. Here it is my two layer card measuring 5.25″ square.

On the Bench – Tutorial #225

Good Morning, Good Morning, Good Morning! I finally feel like I could catch my breath this morning and slooooowwww down to create a little something at a leisurely pace. Sometimes the world just seems like it is going 100 miles an hour. I try not to get caught up in the race, but it sneaks in sometimes anyway, lol. We moved to the country 4 years ago to step back from things a bit and enjoy the slower pace. I forget that now and then.

This mornings project hopefully reflects a peaceful scene, that was my intention anyway.

Supplies:

Stamps: Stampin’ Up “Scene in the Garden” & “Branch Out”

Paper: Stampin’ Up Old Olive Designer Paper, Whisper White & Basic Black card stock

Ink: Stampin’ Up Basic Black, Sahara Sand, Old Olive, Always Artichoke & Close to Cocoa

Accessories: Versamark marker & pad, Stampin’ Up Markers, Old Olive Brads, Black Gingham Ribbon, White Gel Pen, Stamp-A-Ma-Jig, Post it Note, Clear embossing powder, Heat Gun, Sponge

On a 3.5″ x 4.25″ piece of Whisper White card stock stamped the bench with Close to Cocoa ink.

Now this is what happens to your photographs when you accidentally hit the wrong button on your camera, your pictures go out of focus and you don’t realize it until you start to edit them. 🙂

So there are no in focus photos for a few of these next steps, but I will walk you through it.

Colored the bench with a Creamy Caramel marker.

Colored the shadow areas on the legs of the bench with a Close to Cocoa marker.

Colored over the bench legs again to blend the shading with the Creamy Caramel Marker.

Colored over the bench with a Versamark marker and heat embossed the image with clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

Stamped the boots with Basic Black ink using a Stamp-a-ma-jig for placement.

Now we are back in focus, lol.

Colored the middle boots with an Old Olive marker.

Added Always Artichoke marker to the boots.

Colored the boots on the left with an Apricot Appeal marker.

Added More Mustard marker to the boots.

Colored the boots on the right side with a Rose Red Marker.

Added Bravo Burgundy marker to the boots.

Colored over the boots with a Versamark marker and heat embossed them using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

Created a clap board wall behind the bench by using a post it note to mask and sponge at the edge of the post it note with Sahara Sand ink. Moved the mask and repeated sponging over and over until my wall was built. 🙂

Sponged in the ground with Old Olive ink.

Added Always Artichoke ink with a sponge at the bottom of the card stock.

Stamped the tree leaves by first loading the stamp with Versamark and then with Old Olive ink before stamping. Heat embossed the image using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

Stamped the tree over the leaves using Close to Cocoa ink, omitting the grassy section of the stamp by not inking it. Extended the trunk of the tree at the bottom using a Close to Cocoa marker.

Sponged a bit of Old Olive ink in the leaf area of the tree.

Added a bit of shadow in the middle of the tree by sponging in Always Artichoke ink.

Added a few dots of White Gel pen to the tree.

Assembled and added Black Gingham ribbon and Old Olive Brads.

Here it is finished measuring 5.25″ square.

Stamped the Weeds from the Stampin’ Up Pocket Silhouettes set on a 3″ x 7.5″ piece of Whisper White card stock by first loading my stamp with Versamark and then loading it with Always Artichoke before stamping it. Reloaded and stamped again.

Heat embossed the images using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

Stamped the first surf board by loading the top part of the stamp with Tempting Turquoise ink, omitting the bottom part of the stamp.

Added a shadow on the Surf board with a Tempting Turquoise marker.

Colored over the surf board image with a Versamark marker and then heat embossed it with clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

Stamped the second surf board by loading the surf board stamp with Pumpkin Pie ink, omitting the very bottom of the stamp.

Wiped the Pumpkin Pie ink from the blue surf board with a cotton towel being careful not to smear it on the white card stock.

Added a shadow to the Pumpkin Pie Surf board with a Pumpkin Pie marker.

Colored over the Pumpkin Pie Surf Board with a Versamark marker and heat embossed it using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

Repeated the steps used for the Pumpkin Pie Surf Board only using Kiwi Kiss this time for the third surf board.

Used a Certainly Celery marker to create the shadow on the Kiwi Kiss Surf Board.

Colored over the image with a Versamark marker and heat embossed the image using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

Brayered Baja Breeze ink at the top of the card stock.

Brayered Not Quite Navy ink at the top of the card stock, not covering all of the Baja Breeze ink entirely.

Used a post it note to mask my sky area.

Sponge a bit of Not Quite Navy ink at the post it note edge to create my horizon line.

Removed the post it note mask and wiped the ink off of the embossed images with a cotton towel.

Brayered Creamy Caramel ink at the bottom of the card stock.

Sponged some Creamy Caramel ink at the bottom left side of the surf boards to create a shadow.

Tore a hill in a post it note to create some mounds in the sand.

Sponged Creamy Caramel ink at the post it note edge. Moved the post it note and repeated the sponging for the second mound.

Removed the post it note and sponged some Close to Cocoa ink on the surf board shadow to make it just a bit darker.

Here is the card completed measuring 4″ x 9″. I love this size card. It fits in a regular #10 size business envelope, which are cheap to pick up at office supply stores.

This is the end of the tutorial, but hang out a moment and check out some of my photos from my Webster, NY workshop photos.

My 8 hour trip by car from West Alexandria, Ohio to Webster, NY took me all the way through Ohio, then Pennsylvania and on into New York. This was my first time to New York and I will definitely travel back there again if given the chance. I found that upper New York looks very much like Wisconsin with all of it’s farms. A very scenic area.

This first photo is my car all packed with workshop supplies, lol. This does not include my personal luggage that still needs to be added. Second photo is the workshop area in the process of being set up. I love small workshops! Too much fun getting to know everyone.

Now this is my two wonderful Webster, New York Hostesses , Gail Emmons on the left of me and Karen Wright on the right. Love these ladies!

Next photo is of one of the workshops in action, look at those smiles, I must be saying something witty as usual, Hahahahhhahhah!

I was really blessed and asked to stay at my Hostess, Gail Emmons’ lovely, lovely home during my stay. She is quite the gardener too. Being a gardener myself I poked around and took a few photos.

Look at this guy that was in Gail’s pond. 🙂 It is mating season for frogs and one of Gails young granddaughters said ” come look at the frogs, they are standing on top of each other”, too funny. Gail we will let you explain that! I also am not including any frog porn in this blog, so don’t ask me too, lol.

This weekend I am rolling out all new Advanced workshop projects at Marco’s Paper in Centerville (Dayton), Ohio on Saturday. If you have not checked out Marco’s Paper Store, you are really missing something. They are online also, here is the link: http://www.marcopaper.com/.

Heat embossed the image using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

Colored the dots of the Giraffe in with an Apricot Appeal marker.

Colored over the Apricot Appeal marker and the white of the Giraffe’s eye with a Versamark marker and then heat embossed the image using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

Stamped these flower images from the Stampin’ Up Set “Embrace Life” by first loading the stamp with Versamark and then loading the stamp with Close to Cocoa ink before stamping it. Loaded and stamped the image 3 times.

Heat embossed the flower images using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

Colored the flowers in with an Apricot Appeal and a More Mustard marker.

Colored over the colored flowers with a Versamark marker and then heat embossed the flowers using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

Brayered the New In Color ink “Bermuda Bay” at the top right hand corner of the card stock.

Brayered Bermuda Bay ink at the bottom of the card stock.

Sponged the new In Color Ink “Dusty Durango” at the bottom of the card stock.

Created a shadow and some depth to the Giraffe by outlining some of the image with a Basic Black marker.

Used the Ticket Corner Punch on the main image panel and the Handsome Hunter Panel that will go under it.

Sponged Handsome Hunter ink at the top right hand corner of the main image panel.

Added White Gel pen dots in the grassy area.

Sponged Handsome Hunter ink at the top Right Corner and bottom of a 5″ square Apricot Appeal Panel. Also sponged Dusty Durango ink at the bottom of the same panel.

Assembled the card and added ribbon and gold brads, white dots on the Apricot appeal panel and here it is finished measuring 5.5″ square.

I hope you are looking forward to the new Stampin’ Up catalog that comes out July 1st as much as I am!

Just for the heck of it, I thought I would share with you the project I completed yesterday in my garden. That’s right I garden in my spare time (LOL spare time, right).

I installed this fountain at the side of my house where everyone enters off of the drive way.

It is one of those fountains that bubbles over the top and down the jar sides. I was happy with the outcome. 🙂

Getting Patriotic – Tutorial #220

I am feeling a bit patriotic today after driving from Ohio to Minnesota. My 12 hour route took me through Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and then into Minnesota. How can you not feel patriotic driving through such beautiful farm land.

So today’s tutorial uses the Stampin’ Up set “The Free & the Brave”. I altered the image after stamping, making the soldier a silhouette. Check it out in today’s tutorial below.

Supplies:

Stamps: Stampin’ Up “The Free & the Brave”

Paper: Stampin’ Up Whisper White, Baja Breeze & Bravo Burgundy

Ink: Stampin’ Up Basic Black, Baja Breeze, Not Quite Navy, BravoBurgundy & Night of Navy

Accessories: Stampin’ Up Markers, Ruler, Tim Holtz Muse Tokens & Brads, Versamark marker & pad, Sponge, Clear embossing powder, Heat gun, Brayer, White Ribbon, White Gel Pen

Stamped image on a 4″ square piece of Whisper White card stock by first loading my stamp with Versamark and then loading my stamp with Basic Black ink before stamping it. Heat embossed the image using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

Colored in the soldier with a Basic Black marker.

Colored over the soldier with a Versamark marker and then heat embossed the image using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

Added Bordering Blue marker to the flag.

Added Brilliant Blue marker to the flag. Working fast before the ink dried I went over the two blues again with the Bordering Blue Marker to blend them a bit.

Added Real Red marker to the flag.

Added a bit of Bravo Burgundy Maker to the darker red areas of the flag.

Colored over the stars with a White Gel pen and heated the ink to set it with a heat gun.

Colored over the flag with a Versamark marker being careful to work from light to dark areas and cleaning my Versamark marker on my scrap paper often.

Note: The colors will smear. Color one color area at a time and clean your marker in between colors.

Heat embossed the flag using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

Brayered Baja Breeze at an angle on the top and bottom of the card stock.

Brayered Not Quite Navy ink at an angle at the top and bottom of the card stock, not covering the Baja Breeze ink entirely.

Sponged Night of Navy ink around the outside edge of the card stock.

Using a ruler, drew in a flag pole with a Basic Black marker.

Sponged Bravo Burgundy ink around the outside edge of a 5″ square Baja Breeze panel.

Stamped second generation stars with Bravo Burgundy ink.

Note: Second Generation means to load your stamp with ink and stamp off on your scrap paper once before stamping it on your project. 🙂

Added Ribbon and Tim Holtz Muse Token that reads “Courage”.

Added making Brads.

Assembled the card front putting Stampin’ Dimensionals under my top three layers.

Here is my completed card measuring 5.25″ square.

Next I have some photos from my trip to Minnesota.

This was taken while I was driving (I don’t recommend doing this). I am a morning person so my journey started at around 3:30 a.m. So as you see I don’t deal with much traffic the first part of the drive. 🙂 One thing, if you take a trip and you are going to drive through Wisconsin be sure to remember to bring a cooler. I wish I had so I could have brought some Cheese home with me. 🙂

Now this is what I seek out on my frequent stops at antique stores. A girls got to stretch her legs, right? My wooden duck decoy collection is expanding fast! Here are a few of my treasures.

Trendy Trees Scene – Tutorial #219

Happy Hump Day! We made it to the middle of the week, grin.

I am scurrying around today packing for my adventure to Buffalo, Minnesota where I will be teaching Friday and Saturday to sold out groups. I will be leaving around 4:00 a.m. Thursday morning and will arrive around 8:00 p.m. or so that evening. I am one of those odd ducks that likes to drive. I make a day of my travels and stop at antique stores along my route where I find all kinds of treasures. Normally, I am on the lookout for Wooden Duck Decoys, which I collect. Don’t ask me why I collect them, I just do, lol.

This is my last post before leaving. I will return on Monday, June 8, 2009. If you need to e-mail me before Monday, please know I will return my e-mails as soon as I get back. I may or may not have internet access while on the road. 🙂

Now on with today’s tutorial. Are these not the cutest little trees! You know me an tree stamps I have to have them all. These trees are from the Stampin’ Up set “Trendy Trees”.

Today’s tutorial gives you a taste of heat embossing over heat embossing. It is a fun technique. Check it out.

Supplies:

Stamps: Stampin’ Up Trendy Trees

Paper: Stampin’ Up Whisper White, Creamy Caramel, Really Rust, Chocolate Chip

Ink: Stampin’ Up Old Olive, Creamy Caramel, Chocolate Chip, Always Artichoke, Really Rust, More Mustard

Accessories: Versamark Pad, Clear embossing powder, heat gun, Brayer, Sponge, Gold Brads, Ribbon

Stamped the tree leaves stamp 4 times by first loading my stamp with Versamark and then loading it with More Mustard ink before stamping it. I loaded my stamp with Versamark and More Mustard ink for each stamping.

Heat embossed the images using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

Over Stamped the Leaves by loading my stamp with Versamark and then Really Rust ink before stamping them. Heat embossed the Really Rust Leaves with clear embossing powder and a heat gun. It is like magic watching the Really Rust ink disappear off of the More Mustard images when you heat it.

Stamped the tree trunks by first loading my stamp with Versamark and then Chocolate Chip ink before stamping them.

Heat embossed the trunks using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

Now that I have my trees all heat embossed I can apply my background without the ink sticking to the embossing.

Brayered Old Olive ink at the bottom of the card stock.

Brayered Creamy Caramel ink lightly at the top of the card stock.

Ripped a hill shape into the sticky part of a post it note and used it as a mask. Sponged Really Rust ink at the post it note edge to create a hill shape.

Moved the post it note and repeated the sponging of Really Rust ink at the post it note edge to make my second hill.

Sponged Always Artichoke ink in the center of my trees and at the bottom of the card stock.

Sponged Chocolate Chip ink around the outside edges of the card stock.

Cut a 5″ circle out of Really Rust card stock and a 6″ circle out of Creamy Caramel card stock. Cut the circles in half.

Dry embossed my Rust half of a circle and a Chocolate Chip panel using my Big Shot and the Dot Texture plate. Love those texture plates. They are a nice big size.

Brayered Really Rust ink over the Really Rust textured half of a circle. This helps bring out the pattern of the dry embossing.

Assembled my card front and added gold brads and brown ribbon. Here it is finished measuring 5″ x 6.5″.

Alcohol inks, don’t you just love them? They are great on glossy card stock and they work extremely well with transparencies as I will show you in this tutorial.

Stamped Spring Song Hummingbird with Palette Noir Black ink on a 3.25″ x 4.75″ piece of Transparency. I like to use either Palette Noir ink for this or Stazon, either one works fine.

This is my Alcohol ink drawer. 🙂 I have a few colors to pick from, lol.

After the Palette Noir Black ink has dried, I flip the transparency over. The stamping is side down now. This also reverses the image.

Cut a piece of Stampin’ Up Design paper for my background. I like to do this early in the project so I can put my transparency image over it to see how I like it.

I use another transparency as a ink palette. I put a few drops of Lettuce Alcohol ink on the transparency. I keep an Aqua Painter filled with Alcohol Blender Solution for the technique.
