Storm Clean Up

I sure hope everyone survived Hurricane Ike.  It swept through Ohio Yesterday afternoon with winds as high as 78 miles per hour.  On it’s way through it took our power for 12 hours, deck cover and our neighbors roofs.  It also left us with our neighbor’s field of corn stalks in our yard, lol.  What a mess!  So today I will be cleaning up the yard before and after work, so no stamping for me today, sigh. . . . .   It’s amazing how very much we rely on electricity.  We had no way of cooking, since I have an electric stove.  Our cars were stuck in the garage since we have an electric garage door.  We have well water here and so we had just a drizzle of water coming out of our faucets since our well pump is run with electric.   So we sat around looking at each other eating chips and pretzels, the only things we had in the house that was consumable that didn’t need cooking, lol.

I will leave you today with a link to my all time favorite blog CONFESSIONS OF A PIONEER WOMAN.  Check it out!  http://thepioneerwoman.com/confessions/

She won blog of the year last year and well deserved it.

Hope everyone is safe and sound.

Until my next post. . . . . . . . . . . . .

Hugs,

Michelle

We are about a 3 hour drive from Houston and all we got was a few gusts of wind. They weather here is beautiful now and cool. We filled our bathtub with water for “flushing” but didn’t need it as we never lost power. The evacuees have filled all rescue centers in town and those of us who can have been baking and doing laundry for people we don’t even know. I try to put myself in their place and decide what I would need and then go from there. They need stuff to keep themselves busy and fill time. Many of them ask us to try to find their loved ones who were delivered to different relief sights. One woman is separated from her new born who was premature. We have not been successful in finding which hospital or where the baby is. No stamping for me either as I’m thanking God for what I have and that I can slip into my own bed in my own house with my own family and pets surrounding me. If you can help in any way, do it. So sorry you had to experience the destruction Michelle and hope all is well now.

You are so lucky Michelle to have gotten by with your house still intact. It seems you have some busy work ahead of you today. I hope your neighborhood gets the power back on soon – I see Colorado is sending some of our Excel people to different areas to help the places that were hit. My prayers go out to all who are without their loved ones and neccessities that we take for granted daily. Good luck in the cleanup and so glad to hear that you are okay.

Glad you are OK. Prayers go out to everyone who felt the power of Ike. Hope your cleanup goes quickly. We are still cleaning up here from our fire. It seems to take so long to get the cleanup done. Keep you chin up!

I am so glad to hear from you and hear how you made out. That storm was wicked. Your poor garden. Just take it slow and easy, doing what you can. Our thoughts are with you.

Oh, no! Take it easy with the cleanup! I can only imagine how lucky you must feel after seeing your neighbors’ roofs so damaged…So glad you made it through with so little damage, Michelle!

  7. Oh, Michelle, the loss of your power reminds me of several years ago when we were hit with Hurricane Frances. We lost power for 2 weeks, had it restored for almost a week, then Hurricane Jeanne took it out for another week or so. We lost power a week with Hurricane Wilma, also. It’s no fun, that’s for sure. Luckily you only have your yard to clean up, and no major damage.

I’m glad you are okay after the hurricane. It did a lot of damage and my prayers are with everyone impacted by the storm.
We had a tornado go thru 3 mile from us on Saturday. An apartment complex lost 2 roofs off their buildings and some of their family cars were stacked up like matchbox cars. I baked stuff and brought it to the local church where the people who were displaced are being helped. We had no power either yesterday but we have gas oven so I could do baking. We only lost a big branch of our tree.

A tornado went through my neighborhood in 1972. What a huge mess. I lost an awning and the big gadget that brings power into the house, but nothing more serious than curtains inside. There were Christmas decorationa everywhere, as it took out several people’s sheds. Yards were a mess, but not one sightseer offered to help. They even walked across my big front porch and looked in the windows!

Sure makes us thankful for all we didn’t lose. Glad everyone is ok.

Good luck Michelle with your cleaning. The most important thing is that You and your family is Ok. This is one thing that makes us realize how fragile we are and how we can’t do nothing against nature!

Sorry to hear of your storm and the aftereffects……….I know what you mean about being so dependennt on electricity……a year ago last winter, an awful ice/snow storm left us without electricity for 8 days………talk about “roughing it”!!!

I never knew hurricanes (in this case, himmicane) traveled so far north. Also, we have an emergency thingy to use for our garage door in case the power is out, don’t you? We have earthquakes here that can knock out power. Can you use the cornstalks to decorate with for Halloween?

Thank God you’re o.k. When I opened your blog and didn’t see a card I said oh no… when I read what happened I said OH NO!

Good luck with your clean up. You are very fortunate that you did not have more damage. I can relate to your situation with the electricity – we too are on well, electric stove – it is not fun not knowing when the power will be back on and not having water – I love my grill!
    take care,
    Sandra

    Michelle,

Glad to hear that you are okay. If it’s just a bit of clean up and no stamping, that’s a small price to pay. Look for to your posts in the near future.

    Take care.

Oh Michelle, I hope the power is back on soon and the clean up is quick. Sounds like a terrible storm. We have an office in the Dayton area which houses our main call center for our customers and they are without phones today. Couldn’t get in touch with their backup company in Cincinnati until late morning so our customers have been having a difficult time reaching us. I’ll be wishing that everyone there is back to normal soon. On a different note, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Pioneer Woman’s blog and read it daily to see what she’s been up to. I’ve learned photography and editing tips as well as yummy recipes; plus she’s just a darn fun writer!

Glad to read you and the neighbors are safe.
The garage door opener usually has a release cord so you can manually raise the door.
I hope the electricity is quickly restored.

so glad your alright…we didn’t lose power here in the St. Louis area but we did get flooding, thank goodness it didn’t reach our home, (came 2 feet from coming into the garage, but our shed out back was flooded, no major loses though, just needed to do a bit of clean up. Really makes one think of all the people that were hit at the beginning of this thing doesn’t it!

I had no idea that this storm was so powerful that it reached all the way to your neck of the woods. I haven’t heard from my daughter, but she is in Dallas and I figured they would just get rain. You really got quite a bit from Ike. I hope everything is better today and that the cleanup won’t be to arduous. Can’t wait for you to post your cards again. I always look forward to your new posts.

Oh, yeah….here in Pittsburgh we just our power back about an hour or so ago. We went 24 hours without it and it went out just a few minutes into the Steeler game!!!! I swear you could hear all of Pittsburgh yelling at that precise moment! You mentioned being amazed at how much we rely on electricity…I was actually thinking the opposite LOL! We didn’t even miss it! Of course, we don’t have well water, though.

As for Pioneer Woman’s blog…she is a favorite of mine, too! Hers and yours are the blogs I read daily. Her recipes are fabulous!

    Michelle,
We got some rain from Ike just West of Dallas, but no winds like my best friend did in Ohio. Nothing flooded here so that’s good.

It is amazing how much we rely on electricity and technology that inevitably goes with electricity in some way or other.

    Weird.

Next time your electricity is out and the garage door wont open, try this. Along the rail that the door slides up on along the ceiling, there should be a cord (ours is about 18-20″ long) with a handle on the end. Pull this cord and that will disengage the opener and you can open the door manually. To attach the opener to the door again, the door should be down and pull the sliding piece that the cord in on into the mechanism (where the cord was originally) and it clicks into place. If you want to lock the garage door while the electricity is out, there should be a bar on the side edge of the door that slides into a slot in the rail that is attached to the wall. And that should do it.

I love your blog, your cards are amazing!!!

  26. Hello Zindorf…I’m akronstamperdpk’s daughter. My Mom sent me your blog because apparently we have the same favorite blog..Pioneer Woman. I love her pics and stories. I also wanted to relay that our power is STILL out (I’m e-mailing from work), which means no water for us as well. We live in an urban area. It’s so bad in our area they have set up “hygiene” stations at three local schools for people to take a hot shower. I’m hoping for Thursday for power, but they say it may be as late as Sunday. Anyhooo, I love your work on SCS. I have printed out your techniques, but unfortunately haven’t had time to give them a try. It’s very inspiring to look at your artwork. Thank you for sharing them with all of us…Carolyn (scraphappy87)
