Dog Days – Just Gabbing

dsc03599.JPG

Meet Lucas (German Short Haired Pointer/Great Dane Mix) and Abby (Black Lab).   These are my precious pups that are each over 100 lbs, opps!   Abby doesn’t like for me to talk about her weight, sorry girl, lol.

I picked these two up at a local no kill shelter (Sisca) about 5 years ago.  Russ has band me, by the way, from going to the shelter now, since I cannot seem to leave without a dog in tow.  🙂  These two are so very wonderful, I just cannot imagine what they could have done to end up in the shelter, because to me they are perfect.  Just a side note, please adopt!

Anyhow, I am telling you all about them to explain what I am doing this morning, instead of stamping.  Can you guess, lol.

Yes, when you house two very large dogs you do a lot of carpet cleaning, just from them not wiping their feet before entering house.   Note to self, just get dark brown carpet!

Look at those faces.  They are so worth the extra cleaning.

I will be back later with a tutorial.  Hang tight!

Hugs,

Michelle

  1. We’ve got a 3 year old Bernese Mountain dog who weighs 61 kilo’s. He has a lot of hair and likes to shed it after I cleaned to rooms. Luckily I have a tiled floor, it’s a bit easier to clean. But it’s nice to talk to someone when everyone is at school/work.

Beautiful dogs, but Abby doesn’t look a bit over 90 lbs, of course a camera adds 10 pounds! Looking forward to your next creative work!

  3. I have two naughty cats and I’d be lost without my Hoover Steam and Vac. It’s like owning a giant carpet “eraser” of pet stains that has paid for itself ten times over–and my carpeting is light gray. I used to have to get my carpet cleaned professionally every other month, but now I’m the professional, along with a can of Spot Shot! Those two faces are definitely worth it!

  4. I am a dog lover too…and second your idea to adopt from a shelter. I volunteer at our local Humane Society…so hard not to take them all home. For anyone thinking about it…consider an adult dog…usually their only crime was belonging to a family who couldn’t take care of them properly…so hard for them to find homes.

Greetings from Buffalo, NY! I just love your fur babies, Michelle! I grew up in a family that always had dogs that were rescued. Now I’m never home long enough to have dogs, so I own three cats (more like the other way around!) and each one was also a rescue, so I agree with you…please adopt! Thanks for sharing with us!

We are empty nesters who adopted a three year old cat that nobody seemed to want. How she has enriched our lives. This is her “forever” home. A big God Bless You to anyone who adopts. They will certainly be blessed many times over. Thank you for putting this out there for people to see.

Oh they are just BIG SWEETIES!! I’m glad you adopted. Mutts and shelter dogs make the best pets. And big dogs are GREAT. My DD read that big black dogs are the last to be adopted so she adopted a Newfie/Golden retriever cross. I will be grandpuppy sitting this summer and can’t wait…neither can Uncle Doogan and Uncle Griz. LOL

So what if pets are a little more work, they are so enriching…just don’t everyone get a pet unless your sure of the commitment. That’s why they end up in shelters. They are work, you have to walk, clean up, feed and entertain them. But they will love you unconditionally it’s not even close to an even payback.

your dogs are GREAT! We have 3 dogs now, after swearing we would only have 1..LOL. When I moved here my husband already had a lab/shepard mix named Duke, well not too long after I moved in our neighbors moved to a new house (no not because of me..lol), and with them they took Duke’s best friend Sadie (a full bred German Shepard). Well Duke was depressed for quite a while. One day I saw on my local freecycle that some new parents needed to find a home for their shepard/husky mix named Shelby. Shelby they said was 6 years old (so same age as Duke was at the time). We saw a picture of Shelby and fell in love. DH warned me about a ton of dog hair, but we thought it might help Duke to have a companion. He and Shelby get along great. Now, you are wondering how we ended up with 3? Well darling daughter is in the Navy. She got married and about 5 months into the marriage they decided to get a dog. They got a full bred black lab puppy and named it Lila. Well, less than 6 months later daughter and hubby decided to get a divorce. Daughter wanted to keep Lila but was in and out to sea all the time, so Lila came to live with us, since I couldn’t see keeping her penned up all day with no one around. That became full time when daughter saw how lonely Lila would be if she took her back, so now Lila is ours completely. Never wanted 3 dogs, but to be honest they are the best dogs around and we love them to pieces!

thanks for letting me share about my babies. Your Abby looks just like my Lila. BTW, funny thing, daughter is now marrying someone else this weekend and is pregnant with my first grandchild due in August. The baby, a girl, will be named…Abby. LOL!

What a beautiful pair!! They are just “curvy” pups, and they look very happy.
We adopted a 9 year old black lab mix that looks much like Abby! Mariah has the same beautiful wise gray mustache and is such a joy. We just could not believe that she was in a shelter. Our 8 year old male black lab was so excited for his new buddy (previous one passed away) and they are just two peas in a pod!! So happy that you found them. Cheers!

  11. What precious sweeties! I know just how Abby feels about her weight! I am so spoiled! My one and only (also no-kill shelter) dog actually comes in the door and lays down for me to wipe her feet prior to entering the house! lol…

We’ve got three dogs — an Australian Shepherd, a Cairn Terrier (named Abby!), and a Pug who sheds hair like you wouldn’t believe. We got rid of all our carpet a few years ago and put in wood floors — that doesn’t work either! Now I can see all the puppy prints — and all the balls of fur floating around the edges of the rooms. Vacuuming is something that needs to be done every day — and with a full-time job, I’m lucky if I manage to vacuum once a week! But exchanging clean floors for the joy of seeing those three little faces looking out the windows with their tails wagging 90 miles an hour when you pull into the driveway — it is so worth it!

I also understand the part about banning you from visiting the shelter — every time my honey wants to stop by our local shelter (or sees someone selling dogs by the side of the road or knows someone who is giving their dog away or…!), I say NO WAY. I know he would bring home another dog in a heartbeat — and one look into beautiful puppy dog eyes, and I’d be a goner, too.

Thanks for sharing the pictures of your two — they look as sweet as can be!

I have a rescue dog too – a German Shepherd & she has turned out to be nicer in character than the other 3 pedigree GSDs we’ve had in the past. It is a joy to adopt an abandoned dog – they always seem so grateful. Your 2 look adorable.

Good for you for adopting adult dogs. I, too, have two dogs. I got my Westie at 3 years old from a breeder who was thinning her stock. The other one, a Bichon, I got after being fostered in a couple of homes. She had been in a puppy mill having puppies, then the mill got busted. The two dogs are wonderful together. They are now 8 and 9. Mine don’t shed like the big dogs do, so I don’t have the upkeep with vacuuming. I’m so glad I have them. They sit at my feel while I stamp.

Oh Michelle..they are adorable.. I know how you feel.. I went looking at our local animal control for two of our ‘outside’ feral cats that went missing. Even though they were feral, they were ‘ours’. I got there and I wanted to bring these 3 little kittens home w/ me.. they were speckled and needed homes.. Omg.. I cried that I had to leave them. I told my husband I think I wanted to volunteer at the Animal Control facility and he told me to please stay away from there. He knew I would want ever kitten that came through that place..I do have 3 inside kitties and one outside kitty.
    Enjoy those Furbabies..

  17. Love your doggies aka fur babies! They are so cute. I have one Golden Retriever mix mutt adopted from a shelter in Hawaii and two pure bred labs and yes they are house dogs. I can completely understand about the carpet cleaner. LOL I wish I could afford hardwoods or tiles. Thanks for giving them a wonderful home!

  18. Hi Michelle. As you can tell by my email address I am a dog lover as well and have rescued several dogs over the years and they have been the best dogs ever! I just read a book called The Art of Racing in the Rain which is told through a dog’s eyes. It was very good. Anyway I feel your carpet pain. It is a constant battle. Love your poochies! Makes me want to head back to the shelter myself but my husband also said no more for awhile. We only have three right now! lol. Have a good day.

    Hi Michelle –
I am a believer in adopting. I have 4 cats, 2 from Animal Rescue, 1 from Humane Society, 1 from a lady who was going to drown a little newborn kitten. That little kitten is my favorite and now 11 yrs. old. It was hard to tell what she was when I brought her home, but she turned out to be a miniature Birman Siamese. I, too, have to vacuum almost every day. And I wear cat hair daily. It would be great to have clothes without cat hair, but I wouldn’t be willing to give up my cats to achieve it.
My cats are family. They are all getting older now and I can’t imagine life without them.
Have a great day. Looking forward to your tutorial.

I have learned that people that love animals love people. Plus, (in most cases) people treat other people like they treat their animals. What does the following say about us???

With that being said, we have 4 wonderful dogs (God spelled backwards) the smallest being a Jack Russel and the largest being a Siberian Husky , 3 cats that are indoor only – two long hair and one short, 3 large parrots (African Gray, Blue & Gold McCall and an Umbrella Cock-a-to) and 8 chickens (3 bannies & 5 long-island-reds.) Yes, all have names and respond to them….even the chickens.

ALL of our “Childred” were rescued from various situations. My husband grew up with an outside dog and did not know (at first) how to respond to my deep love for animals…but he has learned and grown. They are our kids and we love them deeply. Yes, we have room for more.

Last count, we have gone through three vacuums and working on two more! Thank goodness for “Goodwill” and great values!!

Awww, look at those fur babies. They do look calm and sweet. Husbands dog sheds like crazy. Glad we have laminate floor. I sweep often and get enough fur to knit him a coat! 100 pounds. Our lab must have been small at 60. Hugs…

They look very sweet. We have two dogs as well — Salt and Ginger 🙂 We used to have Pepper as well 🙂 Salt is a Brittany; Ginger a yellow lab. Hair is never ending regardless of what kind of floor. We have wood floors in this house and the fur makes dust bunnies the size of real ones! 🙂
