I’m Molting!! Chicken Update and New Stampin’ Up Promotions

NHello There,
It’s crazy around the coop these days.   A ton of feathers are being lost.   It really scared me when I went out to the chicken run to find feathers lying all over the ground.  I quickly did a head count to make sure no one was eaten, that’s how many feathers were everywhere.
Red’s molting transformation. . . . .
Believe it or not, my Speckled Sussex, Red went from her beautiful feathered self in the picture on the left to this very naked girl on the right.  This process happened in 2 days!  She now has prickly new feathers coming out all over her body.   All I want to do is pick her up and comfort her, but you are not supposed to handle them since molting is a painful process.  If you have never heard of molting before, chickens do it every Fall.  They lose feathers and grow new ones.   They were young chickens last Fall so we only seen a little feather loss.  Believe me, nothing to this extreme.
Close up of Red’s chest and the prickly new feathers poking out.  Yikes!  When the feathers grow out they look like a quill end that has a wax tip.  The chicken will chew the wax tip off and the feather will fluff out.  I’m so glad I don’t have feathers, lol.
I am feeding the flock some protein (scrambled eggs etc.) to help them with the molting process.   Bunny is molting too (shown next to Red) but not nearly as bad as Red.  Molting is different for different chicken breeds, from what I understand.
All I know it sure is an adventure being a chicken owner.  Seems I learn something new about them every day.
On another note, today Russ is having surgery to take the heart monitor out of his chest, whoohoo!  He is doing so well.   Please send healing thoughts his way.  🙂  Also, if you like chickens send some also Red’s way, lol.

Oh my goodness, Michelle!!!!! your chickens have grown in leaps and bounds!!!!! They are gorgeous even with all of those molting feathers. I totally understand your concern when you saw feathers all over the place, I bet you got a little scared too. Glad to hear that all of them are perfectly healthy and happy.
Best wishes and healing ~~~~~ for Ross, I hope all goes well with his surgery and, best wishes and fast ~~~~~ for Red, so he can finish the molting process as quickly as his feathered friends.

I had no idea that it hurt chickens to molt. I feel so bad for them. Hope it is quick. Glad to hear Russ is doing so well. Sending good healing thoughts for this surgery and a speedy recovery.

Praying his procedure goes smoothly. I enjoy hearing about your chickens, and seeing them. My dad raised them when I was young, but I don’t remember them molting. Two days! You’re so right, I’m glad we were blessed with hair rather than feathers. Have a blessed day!

  4. I’ve raised chickens (and ducks and geese) for years…up until the past couple years when they were wiped out by a bear. The bobcat and coyotes didn’t help either! Seems no matter how secure we’d make things, the predators always win, so for now I’m not getting any more, but I sure miss having them! They all have their own personalities and are such fun! The molting process makes them look so ragged, but they’ll beautiful again soon. ~~ Sending Russ healing thoughts!

Hope all goes well for Russ. The two of you are in my thoughts and prayers.
You feed scrambled eggs to chickens? I don’t know anything about chickens. Hope the molting goes quickly. I am also glad we don’t have feathers. Ouch!

The best to Russ and you. So good to hear he’s doing so very well. Extend my best wishes to him, please.
I appreciate you also sharing what you learn about chickens. My grandma and her brother raised chickens when I was young. They lived only about 2 miles up the road from us but I don’t remember anything about chickens except for occasionally collecting eggs. Oh, and having eggs often and chicken dinners every Sunday 🙂 I didn’t realize molting hurt, either, but if they have barbs on their feather tips I can understand why! and how the feathers break through – yikes!

as a soon-to-be Chicken-mom I so appreciate your updates (that would have scared me to death…thinking a critter got to them)
    Thanks!
    Take care!

I sure hope Russ’ surgery went well! That is so awesome that he’s doing so well they can remove the monitor! Hope your chickens aren’t in pain too much longer either 🙂 I have a feeling they don’t have a clue where the scrambled eggs came from 🙂

The $25 offer is very tempting. What are the sales requirements (I’m an awful salesperson!). Would I have to sell x amount of product over a certain period of time?
