Frosted Chickens – Nope, Not a New Dinner

It’s early morning and I made a trip out to the coop to take care of the girls needs.  You know, water, food and treats.   I live in Ohio so, right now, there is snow, lots of frost and thick fog this morning.  It can be pretty but the girls don’t particularly like it.  A handful of the them ventured out to ask me for treats as I entered their yard.  Yep, they have their own yard, own chicken run and large coop.  They are all princesses and don’t like snow on their feet.

All of my white girls are current brown since we had lots of rain before the big freeze hit us this week and their entire yard was mud for days.  So, these princesses are due a good royal bath.  Which they will get when the temps rise and they stand out in the warm rain, lol.

Treat time!  Cracked corn is the treat of the day and it warms their little bodies up.  They get this treat on a fresh shoveled bit of earth, not on a bed of lettuce, lol.

Temperature inside the coop this morning.

This girl does have two legs.  Chickens will tuck one of their legs at a time up in their feathers to keep it warm when they are standing.

They are still laying, mmmm breakfast time!

I’m showing you this picture of my two hives so when you see these northern bees in my later posts this Spring you will know just how amazing they are.

Also, I do take care of the local birds.  Russ probably would wish I didn’t put a big honking bird feeder contraption on our deck but I love to watch the birds during these cold Winter days.  Of course, there is not one bird in this photo because I am standing out there taking photos, lol.  Normally there are at least 30 birds or more out there at any given time.  I probably  spend more money on their feed than I do the people in this house.

Not such a pretty picture right now but I’m keeping it real for you all.  🙂  I have issues.

  1. What a delightful read! My grandfather raised chickens for a living, our next door neighbor had a chicken coop and I would help take care of them. I had two friends who had chickens…nothing like a fresh egg! My father had many bee hives and I helped him sell honey. You brought back fond memories. Your cards are always beautiful when you post them. Just wish I could get some of the tutorials, but I’m a demonstrator so I can’t buy from you…lol.

  2. Michelle, these posts really warm my heart! I’ve tried to talk my husband into raising a few chickens and goats, but he’s said NO. So, I will live vicariously through your posts. I also love to feed the birds, squirrels and deer. Thanks so much for sharing!

Michelle, I love your post about the girls. I also love birds and probably spend too much money on feeding them as well. They are such wonderful creatures and such a blessing to me. I view them as my birds. Thanks so much for the pictures. By the way, here in New York two days ago it was 5 degrees below zero! Huge hugs back,

Where do you live in Ohio. I live an hour away from Cleveland, 20-30 minutes from Akron/Canton area. We were really cole here also and probably at least
-8 – 10 below last week. Love seeing your little farm animals, my son has chickens, goats and bees also, but his always freezes through the winter and buy more when spring comes. I enjoy feeding his chickens what ever garden veggies I have on hand when I see them. Oh and forgot to tell you I enjoy seeing all your cards and they are gorgeous.

  5. Oh my goodness it’s cold. I just can’t get over bees surviving the winter that really surprises me. I’m jealous of your bird feeders I can’t have any I live out in the country at the end of a dead-end road and people are constantly dumping off animals here there so many stray cats running around out here. Thank you for sharing the photos and information it’s fun to see other people’s Critters

    • Hi Victoria, Yes our Northern Bees are quite hardy against the cold weather as long as you have healthy bees in the Autumn. They cluster together and shiver their bodies to keep the hive around 90 degrees. It’s amazing. Hugs!
