Alcoholic Butterfly :) – Tutorial

dsc02786.jpg

I used this technique in yesterday’s tutorial and I found it to be fairly quick and easy, but still has a great wow factor.  Here is another tutorial on alcohol inks and transparency film.

Supplies:

Stamps: Stampin’ Up Wonderful Wings and Toile Blossoms
Paper: Old Olive, Basic Grey Design Paper
Ink: Adirondack Alcohol Inks Butterscotch, Caramel, Latte, Lettuce and Stream, Stazon Black
Accessories: Alcohol Blending Solution, Aqua Brush, Brads, Transparency Film, Ribbon, Styrofoam Plate, Piercing Tool

dsc02798.JPG

Started out with a 5″x 5″ piece of transparency film and Basic Gray Designer paper.

dsc02774.JPG

Stamped Butterfly and flowers using Stazon Black ink.   Keep in mind that your finished image will be reversed in this technique.

dsc02775.JPG

dsc02776.JPG

Let the ink dry and then I flipped the transparency over, ink side down onto the Design paper.

dsc02777.JPG

Put about an inch of Alcohol Blending Solution in an Aqua brush.

dsc02778.JPG

Put a few drops of Lettuce Alcohol Ink on a Styrofoam plate and picked the color up with the Aqua brush and painted the leaves very loosely.  I’m painting on the side that does not have the Black Stazon on it.

dsc02779.JPG

Painted the inside of the flower petals loosely with Caramel Alcohol ink.

dsc02780.JPG

Painted the outside of the flower petals and buds loosely with Latte Alcohol ink.

dsc02781.JPG

Painted the inside of the butterfly wings with Butterscotch Alcohol ink.

dsc02782.JPG

Painted the outsides of the butterfly wings with Stream Alcohol ink.

Note:  if you get a bit of ink some where that you don’t want it.   Clean your brush and just use the alcohol filled aqua brush to whisk it away. 🙂

dsc02783.JPG

The butterfly was too bright for my liking so I tone it down with Caramel Alcohol ink.

dsc02784.JPG

Assembled card using brads to hold the transparency film in place on the card front.

Finished card!

  1. You bring such art to stamping–you’re so amazing! I find it fascinating that you have immense talent as an artist…you don’t even need stamps to make beautiful images, yet you enjoy this medium as well. You write wonderful tutorials, too. It’s very generous of you to share so freely. Everything you make is breathtaking!

  2. You say the image will be reversed in this technique. Could one not have the stamped image on the outside and the coloring on the inside of the transparency/card?

Etha, I don’t see any reason you couldn’t do it that way. Thanks for pointing that out. 🙂

Beautiful, just like everything else you touch!
I bought Alcohol Inks a couple months ago because I saw something that struck my fancy and I couldn’t live without those alchohol inks for another minute. Last week I looked at the unopened package and couldn’t for the life of me remember why I had bought them. Thanks for giving me a new reason, I won’t forget this time ’cause I check your blog at least 3 times a week. Thanks so much for sharing your talent!

  5. What a stunning tutorial, Michelle. Nancyruth just pointed it out to me. I have a question. Does the alcohol blending solution have to be put in a closed container like the aqua brush or could I use it like water and dip a regular brush in it? I guess I am wonderfing if it would evaporate if in an open container????? I cannot paint worth a darn with an aqua brush. I am so intrigued with this technique although I do not own any alcohol ink. Cha-ching!!!!! Maybe it would be better if you told me you couldn’t paint with an open container of the solution.

As always, Michelle! I am amzed at the lovely work you do with your colors and painting.

Kittie asked “Does the alcohol blending solution have to be put in a closed container like the aqua brush or could I use it like water and dip a regular brush in it?” Kittie, I think you could put just enough for the project in a container and dip your brush into it. I don’t think it would evaporate that quickly, but I wouldn’t plan on storing it that way. So get those alcohol inks, I’m excited to see what you come up with!

What is the name of the Basic Gray designer paper? The only place in my city is Hobby Lobby and the only BG paper they have comes in packages. Maybe they will have it, if i know the name of the paper. Thanks

Wow, Michelle, this card is stunning! What a wonderful tutorial you’ve put together. I have alcohol inks and have only used them once. Thanks for sharing this technique, I think I’ll pull out my inks and experiment.

Smallcity, the Design Paper is one of Basic Grey’s from their Perhaps line. I buy the 6″x6″ Paper pads, so I don’t know exactly what that particular paper is named.

Michelle, I just found your blog a little over a week ago and quickly subscribed. Now, when I come home at night, before I start dinner or do anything else, I check my email to see and learn about another one of your wonderful cards. Your tutorials are fantastic and being a visual learner, I love the step by step instructions. I made a similar card tonight with my alcohol inks. I had always used them as a background and had never painted with them before. Thank you for your wonderful cards and inspiration.

This is one of the most elegant cards I’ve seen using transparencies and alcohol inks. Yet your tutorial is clear, simple and easy to follow. Thanks a million for a fantastic use of two of my favorite art supplies. This is my first visit to your blog, but I’ll definitely be watching for more exciting projects.

  18. Your work is breath taking and I can’t even imagine myself doing the things you do. I have been getting your e-mail for quite a while now and just found all of your neat works of art all lined up. I think I am going to try my hand an some of the easier works but I don’t have that kind of ink and I can’t get out to get it. All I have is Stampin’ Up and Stazon along with a few others. Thank you so much for sharing. Karen B.

  20. This is amazing. I have tried the AI directly onto transparency but one colour bleeds into the other. I never dreamed of using my aqua brush to do this.
Thanks so much for sharing your tutorial.
    This is a stunning card.
