Toile Blossoms Scene – Tutorial

dsc05046.JPG

Today’s piece is dedicated to all the Stampin’ Up stamp hoarders.  Now you know who you are, a few of you have even asked me to use some of my old, but loved stamps in projects.  I was a hobby demo so I never felt the need to get rid of my old stamps when new ones came out.  So I have around 300 Stampin’ Up sets, that is what is left after weeding out sets that weren’t my style.  We won’t talk about my unmounted stamp collections in this same post. You all will think I’m a stamp junkie or something, lol.

Let me hear about your stamp collections/addiction in the comments section of this post.  If you are getting this by e-mail update, click this link to leave me your comment:

I know I’m not the only one that will chose new stamps over new shoes, let me hear from you.  🙂

Anyway, I have used Stampin’ Up sets “Toile Blossoms” &  “Lovely as a Tree” in today’s piece.

Let’s get started on the tutorial.  🙂

Supplies:

Stamps: Stampin’ UP Toile Blossoms & Lovely as a Tree
Paper: Stampin’ Up Whisper White, Not Quite Navy and Soft Sky
Ink: Stampin’ Up Soft Sky, More Mustard, Not Quite Navy, Basic Black & Old Olive, Palette Noir Black
Accessories: Piercing Tools, Prismacolor Markers, Going Gray marker, White Gel Pen, Black marker, Ticket Corner Punch, Sponges, Brayer, Clear Embossing Powder, Heat Gun, Versamark Marker, Gold Brads

dsc05051.JPG

Stamped Toile Blossom images on a piece of 5″ x 5″ Whisper White card stock with Palette Noir Black ink.

dsc05025.JPG

dsc05026.JPG

Colored the center of the flower petals with a Prismacolor Deco Pink marker.

dsc05027.JPG

Added just a little Prismacolor Magenta marker to the flower petal centers.

dsc05028.JPG

Colored the leaves with a Prismacolor Chartreuse marker.

dsc05029.JPG

Colored the shadow (dark side) of the leaves with a Prismacolor Light Olive Green marker.

dsc05030.JPG

Colored over the leaves and flowers with a Versamark marker.

Note:  Be careful to color the white parts first and then the colored parts so the color doesn’t smear onto the white part of your image.  You can clean the tip of your Versamark marker my coloring on scrap paper for a second.

dsc05031.JPG

Heat emboss the images using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

dsc05032.JPG

Brayered Soft Sky ink at the top of the card stock.

dsc05033.JPG

Brayered Not Quite Navy ink at the very top of the card stock, not covering the Soft Sky ink entirely.

dsc05034.JPG

Stamped Tree image with Palette Noir Black ink.

dsc05035.JPG

Sponged More Mustard ink on the bottom of the card stock.

Note:  The embossed images resist the ink.  Just wipe the ink off the images with a paper towel.

dsc05036.JPG

Sponged Old Olive ink at the bottom of the card stock using a swiping motion from the bottom let corner toward the top right.  This was done to simulate grasses.  Also, sponged Old Olive Green ink in the leaf area of the tree.

dsc05037.JPG

Added just a bit of Black ink to the very bottom of the card stock.

dsc05038.JPG

Colored the tree trunk with a Going Gray Marker and added some grasses at the base of the tree with a Prismacolor Light Olive Green marker.

dsc05039.JPG

Sponged a bit of Basic Black ink on the right side of the leaf area of the tree and just a faint hint of black under the tree for a shadow.

dsc05040.JPG

Added White highlights (specks) on the left side of the leaf area of the tree with a white gel pen.

dsc05041.JPG

Sponged heavily some Not Quite Navy ink at the top of the card stock to give the sky some interest.

dsc05042.JPG

Used a black fine line marker and traced along the bottom side of the flowers and leaves to create the look of a shadow.  Also colored along the right side of the tree trunk with the black marker.

Used the ticket corner punch on the main image panel and the Not Quite Navy panel.

dsc05043.JPG

Used my piercing tools and a fine tip black marker to do some faux stitching all the way around the card stock.

dsc05044.JPG

dsc05045.JPG

Added some gold brads and here is the completed card measuring 5.25″ x 5.25″.

dsc05046.JPG

Hope your day is filled with blooming flower gardens and shade trees.

Until my next post. . . . . . .

Michelle

  1. Another pretty card! I love those Toile Flowers! But I don’t have ’em! I have been stamping about 4 years…I have nearly 100 SU sets…and most are retired! I have a tendency to buy them right before they go! I have never parted with any stamps, even the ones I barely use. This summer I discovered Our Daily Bread Designs…and I own all 7 sets. Next week they will have 2 more…what to do, what to do? Now I want to start on papertrey Ink and Verve, and…

I am considering signing up as a Hobby Demo for SU…have to support my habit, you know! 😉

    hi…my name is sandy…and i’m a rubber addict! (hi sandy…)
i’m a very big collector of all kinds of stamps. i have many su sets that have never touched ink, as well as other wood mounted and thousands of um rubber. i’ve been categorizing them and putting the wood mounteds in iris drawers and a nice stamping cabinet i bought a few years ago. the um’s are my problem. i have at least separated them into categories in different bags but have not put them in cd cases or even put them on mounting foam (yet). i keep thinking that when i retire, i won’t be able to feed my addiction so better hoard now while i can! of course, that is all just rationalizing!
i love it though…a girl’s gotta have SOME habits!
(btw….hi to shirley lee from roseville! it’s me! sandy from citrus heights! fun to “see” you here!)
thanks again for another great tutorial michelle! makes my day!

  3. Michelle, your cards are always so inspiring! I, too, have so many stamps and so few shoes! I am so excited that I have both sets you showed in this tutorial! I never woudl have thought to color in a flower and then clear emboss over the whole image so I could brayer with confidence! I thought you must have cut out a mask! Love the embossing idea!!!! Thanks so much!!

Beautiful! Choose new stamps over new shoes? I’m even go so far as to cut deep into my own food budget for stamps. My fridge is generally close to empty except for some yogurt for me and food I keep for my husband and son. Its the best diet I’ve been on the past 10+ years: skip the unnecessary food for myself and spend that on stamps. Its a win win situation because then I don’t have to worry about losing weight!

    LOVE this one!

Hi Michelle, you do make me laugh! I’m so glad when you use the older sets. I’m an almost ex-hobby demo, and I mainly got sets I love and kept them too. That’s the main reason for doing the demoship for me! Boy, it was worth it. My husband is stunned with the number of sets I have, and has learned not to ask “But don’t you have enough stamps?” Silly man!
Even the sets that I’m not so crazy about, I’ll keep. Just in case I need them, if I see something that I can CASE, or a great idea. But I love you ideas, because our taste is similar- but you cards are waaaay more beautiful than mine!
Thanks for publishing your blog. You are so generous!

Karen (who has been making a concerted effort lately to update her wardrobe. Have to wear scrubs for work, so I was able to let it slip while I bought stamps…!) 🙂

Thank you once again for a great tutorial. I am also a hobby demo, but here in New Zealand we have had SU for 15 months. I am new to stamping and I thought that the 62 sets I have was alot but I see that I still have a long way to go. Yes I would buy stamp stuff before clothes and shoes. And of course we have winter at the moment so on cold wet days I can not think of any thing better that checking out your blog.

Michelle ~ I’m relatively new to stamping compared to most other ‘horders’ :-), but in my opinion — the older SU sets were the great ones. I look for those rather than the new ones which are just too funky for me. I happen to have Toile Blossoms and will surely benefit by this tutorial as I do all of your others. Thanks again for such a great sharing of your gift of art.

Oh man, I still have Button Bear…I don’t use it, but I have it there just in case I might…I was a SU Demo too, so I have *clearing throat* many. (Ok Michelle, you still have me beat, but not by much)LOL:) Probably a good idea to NOT discuss our UNmounted habits in the same post…
And Girls, I had to admit this, but I have a lot of shoes too. Shoes, not clothes. Shoes always fit, and in no way make my butt look big. (ok, big..ger)
    Beautiful card Michelle!

You are the Queen of Soft Sky! Lovely card. Stamp Junkie, you are not alone by far. I would like to weed out the stamps I don’t use, but it seems like a hassle getting them on Ebay and you may get good money for them or practically nothing. I’m not sure it is worth the effort. I am a hobbist too. I may have about 300 sets and at least as many or more of unmounted. I switched unmounted so I could buy more, save room etc. I opt for new cameras and stamps in lieu of pretties like a new wedding ring like my husband wanted me to get. Sure I would like a new wedding ring, but I want the stamps and cameras more!!! Junkie…YES!

I am in such awe of your talent! Thank you for your unbelievable tutorials. And I’ll sacrifice just about anything – except chocolate and coffee – for a new stamp!

When you are coloring over a larger image with the versa marker, how do you keep it from drying up on the first part of the image you colored?

what a lovely card!! I enjoy seeing all your creation, and am envious of your talent. Not only that, but you have the time and patience to do tutorials of all of them (which I truly appreciate)
I am also addicted to stamps! Now I am a SU domonstrator, but years ago, before that, my friend and I went to a stamping convention in Boston. Now, we both brought cash. and we both spent it. We then pulled out our credit cards, and I”m really ashamed to admit just how much we put on those credit cards to have the stamps “we just had to have”. We’re both married now, and can’t spend the way we did. But the addiction is still there, and we never have enough stamps. I have never counted my stamps, but there are hundreds of them!!! 🙂

Lovely as a Tree is one of my very favorite sets. Your card is a work of art! You amaze me with the ideas you come up with. Your cards with tree scenes are always jaw droppers! It was fun to read the confessions on today’s blog. I don’t have as many stamps as a lot of these ladies, but I recognize the warning signs in myself that signal a stamping addiction- lol! Thanks for another beauty- you rock!!!

Oh, Michelle, this card is just gorgeous!!! I love the images, the colors and your coloring technique!

I can’t say I *hoard* S.U. as I only own four sets, a couple of backgrounds and two wheels all of which I’ve gotten within the last year! However, in the last 12 years I have accumulated thousands of stamps from many companies. Addicted?? Oh, yes! I have a hard time parting with any of my stamps. I did just buy a pair of shoes that I’ve been on the hunt for for quite a while, maybe a year or so, lol – but stamps, they just seem jump into my shopping basket!

Lovely As a Tree is an old classic that everyone’s collection should include. This “rubber madness” began as a whim, on to a passtime, to a hobby, to an obsession and now to an addiction! I’m so glad so many people share this passion with us and create beautiful things for others to enjoy. I too had a hard time letting go of my cards, and I like the post from one of your ‘groupies’ who says she now creates duplicate cards so she can keep one and still give one away! Sounds like something I should start. If I created something as lovely as you do daily, I would have a real hard time giving anything away! Love your work and your blog!

    Michelle,

You are too funny. I had to laugh because yes, I am an obsessed stamp collector. I would and have given up new shoes, clothes, and many other things all for new stamps. I purchased a couple of new stamps today actually. Not to mention the Stampin Up order that just arrived at my door today. What a bad girl that I am. Do we all need a new group called “stampers anonymous” to help us with our addiction? I don’t think so…………… I am obsessed, and plan to stay that way as long as I can. So what if the soles on my shoes are wearing out! I am not barefoot yet! On another note, I am also obsessed with all of the accessories as well. Such as, brads, buttons, ribbon, fibers, punches, designer paper, cardstock, etc. You get the point. Anyways, I love todays card. As always, it is fabulous. Keep sneaking the old SU stamp sets into your posts from time to time.
    Happy stamping, Lisa in Ohio

Gorgeous card!! So awesome! My name is Beth and I have an addiction to stamps also. I have only sold one old stamp set and I still kick myself for it. As far as counting….I don’t dare!! And now I also am venturing into some unmounted. I’ll take stamps anyday over shoes……no doubt about it! I’m getting my tools out this weekend and I’m making me a pretty card ( that probably will look nothing like yours at all)….but I’m going to try!

Gorgeous!! As for my stamping addiction, I have yet to get rid of any stamp that I didn’t accidentally buy two of! I am about to participate in my first garage sale at my lss. I am not sure what I will part with. I too am a hobby SU demo. I have not a clue how many stamp sets and individuals that I have. But I have a lot. More than any human needs that is for sure. Hopefully I can weed some out for this sale.

I have long been in awe of your beautiful creations! I, too, am a hobby demonstrator, so know what you mean about keeping all the older stamp sets – I do the exact same thing.

I cannot wait to give this card a try. It’s stunning! I appreciate you giving out the information needed to recreate this project on my own. Nice of you to share how you accomplish these gorgeous cards!

Thanks again and keep the lovely cards coming,

I laughed out loud at the shoe comment – Just yesterday my husband and I were at the mall and we passed a luggage/purse store and he said “I don’t understand how these stores stay in business” and I said “that’s because you’re lucky – you’re not married to a purse girl. I’m not a purse girl, or a shoe girl for that matter” and he sort of rolled his eyes and said “yeah but you make up for it in stamps” Guilty as charged! I am a business stampin’ up demo so 99% of my stamps are stampin’ Up but your awesome creations have had me hoping for a whole bunch of new botanicals in the new catty.

I have lots of stamp sets from SU, but no where near 300 – lol. I only started up 2 years ago and there was so many that I wish I was able to get after looking through some of the older catalogues. the problem is they are hard to find.
Thank you Michelle for doing tutorials with all these beautiful cards – hands on works best for me. Now I just have to give one of them a try
