Harvest Moon – Tutorial #101 and Blog Candy

dsc05504.JPG

It’s been unseasonally cool here in Ohio for August and it makes me want to think of fall.  Fall is my favorite, favorite, favorite season of all.  The colors just speak to my creative side.

Also, I wanted to use these great stamps by Fire Cracker Designs By Pamela.  Here is a link if you want to check them out: http://www.safesecurestore.com/stores/merchant.mvc?Screen=SFNT&Store_Code=firecrackerdesignsbypamela   Love them!

I’m always happy to get a set of stamps that has images, such as the corn stocks that are in different sizes.  Makes making scenes with depth so much easier.  So you stamp creators out there keep that in mind, please, lol.

Oh yeah, I’m giving this card away as blog candy!

So to enter for a chance to win this card, please leave me a comment on this post telling me your favorite thing about the Fall Season.  If you are getting this blog update by e-mail you will need to click this link to leave a comment on this blog post:   http://zindorf.blogs.splitcoaststampers.com/2008/08/13/harvest-moon-tutorial-and-blog-candy/

I will use a random number generator to pick the winner on the morning of Saturday, August 16th.

Ready for this tutorial?  It’s a long one today, so grab a cup of your favorite hot beverage and lets get started. 🙂

Supplies:

Stamps: FireCrackerDesignsByPamela
Paper: Stampin’ Up Whisper White, Baja Breeze, Basic Black
Ink: Stampin’ Up Baja Breeze, Night of Navy, Not Quite Navy, Basic Black, Old Olive, Close to Cocoa, Palette Noir Black
Accessories: Brayer, Clear Embossing Powder, Heat Gun, Piercing Tools, Brads, Prismacolor Markers, Versamark Pad and Marker, Sponges,Post it Notes, Coluzzle Circle Template, Fine tip Black marker

dsc05507.JPG

Stamped the scarecrow on a piece of 4.25″ x 5.75″ piece of Whisper White Card stock with Palette Noir Black ink.  I used this ink so I can color with Solvent based Prismacolor markers and don’t have to worry about it running.

dsc05469.JPG

Colored with Prismacolor Eggshell Marker.

dsc05470.JPG

Added Prismacolor Sand.

dsc05472.JPG

Added Prismacolor Cloud Blue.

dsc05473.JPG

Added Prismacolor Blue Slate.

dsc05474.JPG

Shaded tan areas by going over parts of them with the Eggshell marker.

Nice thing about Solvent based markers, you can shade by coloring and letting it dry and then going over parts of it to get a darker color.

dsc05475.JPG

Colored Shirt with Prismacolor Goldenrod.

dsc05476.JPG

Added Prismacolor Tuscan Red.

dsc05477.JPG

Shaded the Shirt by going over parts of it again with the Goldenrod marker.

dsc05478.JPG

Colored over the entire image with a Versamark marker and heat embossed using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

dsc05479.JPG

dsc05480.JPG

Stamped small Cornstalks by first loading the stamp with Versamark and then Old Olive ink before stamping.

dsc05481.JPG

Heat embossed images using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

Note:  you do not have to clean the ink or embossing powder off of the scarecrow.  It will melt right into the embossing powder on the scarecrow and disappear.

dsc05482.JPG

Colored in the stalks with a Prismacolor Eggshell marker.

dsc05483.JPG

Colored over the stalks with a Versamark marker and heat embossed using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

dsc05484.JPG

dsc05485.JPG

Stamped large cornstalks by first loading the stamp with Versamark and then Close to Cocoa ink before stamping.

dsc05486.JPG

Heat embossed images with clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

dsc05487.JPG

Colored in the large stalks with a Prismacolor Sand marker.

dsc05488.JPG

Colored over the large stalks with a Versamark marker and heat embossed using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

dsc05489.JPG

dsc05490.JPG

Cut a circle out of a Post it note being sure to have part of the circle cut from the sticky part of the Post it note.

dsc05491.JPG

Used the post it note circle as a mask for the moon.

dsc05492.JPG

Brayered on Baja Breeze ink at the top and bottom of the card stock leaving a light space in the middle.

dsc05493.JPG

Brayered on Not Quite Navy ink at the top and bottom of the card stock not covering the Baja Breeze ink entirely.

dsc05494.JPG

Brayered on Night of Navy ink at the top and bottom of the card stock not covering the Not Quite Navy ink entirely.

dsc05495.JPG

Removed post it note mask.

dsc05496.JPG

Sponge some Baja Breeze ink over the Moon using a swiping motion from side to side to streak it.

dsc05497.JPG

Sponged Basic Black ink around the card edge to get it really dark.  The darker you get the outside of the scene the more the lighter parts in the middle pop!

dsc05498.JPG

Assembled card front and used a Piercing tool and pierced around the moon edge.

dsc05499.JPG

Drew a line with a fine tip black marker from pierced hole to pierced hole to create some faux stitching.

dsc05500.JPG

Used the Tim Holtz ruler and a piercing tool to pierce the middle panel edge.  Oops!  check out that crocked right pierced line.  Covered the mistake with a brad in the right upper and lower corner, lol.   And you thought I didn’t make mistakes!  Hah!!!

dsc05501.JPG

Added more brads and here is the finished card measuring 5″ x 6.5″.

dsc05504.JPG

Whew, that was a long project!

Hope your day is filled with early cool Fall breezes and moon lite night.

Until my next post. . . . .. . . .. . . . .

Hugs,

Michelle

Thanks for your clear instructions and tutorials. Love the tip about not needing to wipe the ink off the embossed surface. I kept smudging ink on the background ’cause I was wiping it off. I’ll have to give this a try.

Great card! Fall, what is not to love, cooler temps, crisp clean air, glorious leaf colors, Halloween, Thanksgiving and campfires!!!! Your turorials are great, expanding my horizons. I have a question for you. Are your fingers constantly stained with ink as mine are? Have you found something that works better than good old scrubbing with soap and water? Sometimes the ink just has to wear off. Would appreciate your input. Thanks

Love the beautiful colors of the fall leaves. I love going to the mountains and seeing the beautiful colors. Just makes me appreciate God even more to see His wonderful designs unfolding in glorious colors. Thanks for taking the time to film and make your tutorials. What a generous person you are!

BEE-utiful card as always, Michelle. Thanks for showing how to cover up a mistake! That’s a real test of my creativity as I usually manage to do something to mess up my project right towards the end! 😦 Oh well, it usually works out.

Favorite thing about fall? Probably a bright orange or red leaf tree. Presently I live in Hawaii and the seasons are fairly unnoticeable, but that’s what I liked about fall in my home state of Missouri (of course, I hated raking those same leaves!)

Thanks again for an awesome tut and I meant to congratulate on the 100th yesterday!! May there be a thousand more!!! 🙂 Aloha, Kim

That was a long tut but so worth it! Thanks a bunch for another winner. My birthday is in the Fall so I think that colors my impression of it being the most beautiful time of year. I’m partial to the colors of Fall so that’s the best. The worst part for me is knowing that Winter is just around the corner.

You continue to wow me! Thanks for the great tutorials and wonderful designs you come up with. I have to say August is a bit wet and cooler here in NH as well.

I would have to say that my favorite part of fall is Halloween or at minimum trick or treat time. I just love to watch the little ones coming down the street with their bags and adorable outfits.

Would be honored to win this card. Keep up the great inspirations!

If there was an Olympic agenda for rubber stamping you would definitely get gold!
And that is the color that seems to descend on everything in the Autumn season and starts the new color process. Let’s don’t forget bronze (my favorite metal) and what it does to nature in the Autumn. Here in San Jose we get about 20 minutes of Autumn so I take a trek to my daughter’s in Southern Oregon to really experience my favorite season. See you back here again in San Jose in October. I’m signing up again! Could you bring some Ohio Autumn with you?

I love the colors of our trees in the Maritimes of Canada. There is a tree of every gold, red and green available. Our woods look like a beautiful painting. It is absolutely mind blowing. If you have never seen our trees then you should have a trip here. PS the card is beautiful.

Another amazing card and tutorial. There are so many wonderful things about the fall season. I would have to say, in general, the colors. When we lived in Houston, I missed the fall colors, sights, smells, and sounds. Maybe “sensory overload” is a better description that colors. Anyway, loved your card with a chance to possibly own one of them. Thanks for all your inspiration.

    Michelle,
This card is wonderful! It reminds me of “The Wizard of Oz”! My favorite thing about Fall is the cooler temperatures. I’m a hot flash just waiting to combust and incinerate so I welcome the cooler temps. I also LOVE the aspen when they are at their height of change. The gold is so brillant it can actually hurt your eyes. Thanks for asking!

I too love the fall season – the weather is more temperate and you have that whiff of burning leaves and furnaces just starting up in the air. Plus in our area of the country we see the farmers going into their fields to do the harvest – pick the corn and the beans and then the first frost – ah fall – hmmmmmm

Love that stamp set too – gonna have to do a little brayering myself I guess.

Wow! that was long, but a wonderfully detailed one! Thank you so much for sharing your great talent. As far as fall goes, won’t see any fall like weather in AZ till the end of October and then if you blink it’ll be gone, but it is fun to drive up north and see the change in seasons.

  22. What an awesome card! Your technique is amazing to me! Being fairly new to this stamping stuff, I’m not sure how the braying of the ink didn’t mess up your coloring of the cornstalks. I’m assuming that it is because of the clear embossingi powder? Did you just wipe it off? That’s the only part I’m confused on. Other than that, great tutorial! Thanks so much for sharing! Best, Curt

  23. Curt asked “I’m not sure how the braying of the ink didn’t mess up your coloring of the cornstalks?”

Curt, the embossing powder resists the ink, so you are right. You just wipe the ink off of the heat embossed images. 🙂

I love sweater weather. You know that brisk feel that requires a light jacket or sweater. I love the blue of the fall sky (that is when it is not gray here in Detroit!) And who can deny that fall leaves are just gorgeous!

Oh my gosh, I have just found your site and I am in love with your beautiful cards. I can’t wait to try them. I doubt they will come out as pretty as yours but I will try. I live in Florida, we don’t have the Falls that the rest of the country has, but it nice not having my legs stick to the leather seats. Ahh the joys.. Thanks for sharing

Hi Michelle…your cards are so amazing and your tutorials so generous! It’s winter in Australia and a very cold and wet day in Melbourne, about 10 celcius (50 fahrenheit) which is probably not that cold to most Americans but for us it is. I’m looking forward to warm spring days, lots of flowers and new life.

Hi Michelle ~ what a positively beautiful card, as always. My favorite thing about Fall is the promise of all good things to come – the change in the air, the slight chill, the smells that arrive like pumpkins and spices and knowing that in just a little while, family will be gathering together to celebrate all His blessings.

I am new at stamping, and have discovered splitcoast stampers. I kept seeing everyone using the Zindorf technique for the best skyscapes! I had to know what they were talking about so I checked out your blog, and found your tutorials! You are a talented artist, and I will love seeing what you have created and what you will create next! Next item on my list is a brayer!!
Since I am new at stamping, just started this year, my husband is in awe of all the tools I must have! I told him it’s an addictive hobby, and I love it! He is very supportive–especially after looking and giving him some of the cards I have made.
We are thinking about making a hobby room for my card crafts! I am excited!
I do appreciate your step by step instructions and how you show how they look!! I have immediately tabbed this site as my favorites, so I can learn more!
