Harvest Moon – Tutorial #101 and Blog Candy

dsc05504.JPG

It’s been unseasonally cool here in Ohio for August and it makes me want to think of fall.  Fall is my favorite, favorite, favorite season of all.  The colors just speak to my creative side.

Also, I wanted to use these great stamps by Fire Cracker Designs By Pamela.  Here is a link if you want to check them out: http://www.safesecurestore.com/stores/merchant.mvc?Screen=SFNT&Store_Code=firecrackerdesignsbypamela   Love them!

I’m always happy to get a set of stamps that has images, such as the corn stocks that are in different sizes.  Makes making scenes with depth so much easier.  So you stamp creators out there keep that in mind, please, lol.

Oh yeah, I’m giving this card away as blog candy!

So to enter for a chance to win this card, please leave me a comment on this post telling me your favorite thing about the Fall Season.  If you are getting this blog update by e-mail you will need to click this link to leave a comment on this blog post:   http://zindorf.blogs.splitcoaststampers.com/2008/08/13/harvest-moon-tutorial-and-blog-candy/

I will use a random number generator to pick the winner on the morning of Saturday, August 16th.

Ready for this tutorial?  It’s a long one today, so grab a cup of your favorite hot beverage and lets get started. 🙂

Supplies:

Stamps: FireCrackerDesignsByPamela
Paper: Stampin’ Up Whisper White, Baja Breeze, Basic Black
Ink: Stampin’ Up Baja Breeze, Night of Navy, Not Quite Navy, Basic Black, Old Olive, Close to Cocoa, Palette Noir Black
Accessories: Brayer, Clear Embossing Powder, Heat Gun, Piercing Tools, Brads, Prismacolor Markers, Versamark Pad and Marker, Sponges,Post it Notes, Coluzzle Circle Template, Fine tip Black marker

dsc05507.JPG

Stamped the scarecrow on a piece of 4.25″ x 5.75″ piece of Whisper White Card stock with Palette Noir Black ink.  I used this ink so I can color with Solvent based Prismacolor markers and don’t have to worry about it running.

dsc05469.JPG

Colored with Prismacolor Eggshell Marker.

dsc05470.JPG

Added Prismacolor Sand.

dsc05472.JPG

Added Prismacolor Cloud Blue.

dsc05473.JPG

Added Prismacolor Blue Slate.

dsc05474.JPG

Shaded tan areas by going over parts of them with the Eggshell marker.

Nice thing about Solvent based markers, you can shade by coloring and letting it dry and then going over parts of it to get a darker color.

dsc05475.JPG

Colored Shirt with Prismacolor Goldenrod.

dsc05476.JPG

Added Prismacolor Tuscan Red.

dsc05477.JPG

Shaded the Shirt by going over parts of it again with the Goldenrod marker.

dsc05478.JPG

Colored over the entire image with a Versamark marker and heat embossed using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

dsc05479.JPG

dsc05480.JPG

Stamped small Cornstalks by first loading the stamp with Versamark and then Old Olive ink before stamping.

dsc05481.JPG

Heat embossed images using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

Note:  you do not have to clean the ink or embossing powder off of the scarecrow.  It will melt right into the embossing powder on the scarecrow and disappear.

dsc05482.JPG

Colored in the stalks with a Prismacolor Eggshell marker.

dsc05483.JPG

Colored over the stalks with a Versamark marker and heat embossed using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

dsc05484.JPG

dsc05485.JPG

Stamped large cornstalks by first loading the stamp with Versamark and then Close to Cocoa ink before stamping.

dsc05486.JPG

Heat embossed images with clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

dsc05487.JPG

Colored in the large stalks with a Prismacolor Sand marker.

dsc05488.JPG

Colored over the large stalks with a Versamark marker and heat embossed using clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

dsc05489.JPG

dsc05490.JPG

Cut a circle out of a Post it note being sure to have part of the circle cut from the sticky part of the Post it note.

dsc05491.JPG

Used the post it note circle as a mask for the moon.

dsc05492.JPG

Brayered on Baja Breeze ink at the top and bottom of the card stock leaving a light space in the middle.

dsc05493.JPG

Brayered on Not Quite Navy ink at the top and bottom of the card stock not covering the Baja Breeze ink entirely.

dsc05494.JPG

Brayered on Night of Navy ink at the top and bottom of the card stock not covering the Not Quite Navy ink entirely.

dsc05495.JPG

Removed post it note mask.

dsc05496.JPG

Sponge some Baja Breeze ink over the Moon using a swiping motion from side to side to streak it.

dsc05497.JPG

Sponged Basic Black ink around the card edge to get it really dark.  The darker you get the outside of the scene the more the lighter parts in the middle pop!

dsc05498.JPG

Assembled card front and used a Piercing tool and pierced around the moon edge.

dsc05499.JPG

Drew a line with a fine tip black marker from pierced hole to pierced hole to create some faux stitching.

dsc05500.JPG

Used the Tim Holtz ruler and a piercing tool to pierce the middle panel edge.  Oops!  check out that crocked right pierced line.  Covered the mistake with a brad in the right upper and lower corner, lol.   And you thought I didn’t make mistakes!  Hah!!!

dsc05501.JPG

Added more brads and here is the finished card measuring 5″ x 6.5″.

dsc05504.JPG

Whew, that was a long project!

Hope your day is filled with early cool Fall breezes and moon lite night.

Until my next post. . . . .. . . .. . . . .

Hugs,

Michelle

Love the card! Reminds me of nice, crisp, fall days. We don’t get much color change in the Lowcountry of SC, but I also love the color change when I get a chance to see it!

    Have a great day!

Beautiful piece! What mistake? I’m in complete agreement with you about Fall being my favorite season. I think I’ll appreciate it a bit more this year as we’ve been having 105 degree weather here in Central Texas…..whewww its hot! Autumn brings with it a certain hustle & bustle in preparation of winter. Its a time to contemplate your garden successes from last spring and plan for next spring. I don’t think one can start the day any better than a walk on a cool brisk morning before the sun has broken the horizon. And apples are in season!

Beautiful fall card, Michelle! The thing I love most about fall is the crisp, clear days and the gorgeous foliage! I lived in S. California for 12 years and really missed the turning of the leaves. Here in North Carolina, our falls are fantastic!

Also my favorite time of year. God pulls out all the stops this time of year, unlike the colors of spring that speak of a beginning, something neww, the fall colors speak to me that all is right with the world, we are strong, full and mature and can make it thru the winter of our life by remembering the strong colors of fall. Once again a beautiful card.

    Michelle,
Fall is also my favorite time of the year. My favorite memories are of taking the kids Apple Picking on a crisp fall day. The smell of apple cider, the taste of apples fresh from the tree, the warm sun on our faces and warm apple crisp….heaven on earth. Thank you for the inspiration.

  10. Another amazing card. My favorite thing about autumn has to be the colours in autumn leaves, from pale creams and yellow into deep pinks, oranges, firey reds, copper and bronze.

I’d love to win one of your cards – they are all so amazing! Here in N TX we have about a week of fall & then it’s straight into winter! I’m from AR, so I really miss the turning of the leaves. When I do chance upon a tree here that has turned, it’s all I can do not to sit & stare!

  15. Absolutely amazing card Michelle!! I love what you did with Pamela’s stamps! Thanks for the tutorial (again), I am always blown away by your beautiful scenes.

My favorite thing about fall has always been the weather. We live in the midwest and it’s HOT in the summer and COLD in the winter. Fall is just right, LOL. It’s always been my favorite season. It’s sunny but not blazing hot, the colors change, the bugs die down – it’s the best!

Now that I have kids I also love doing fall activities with them like the pumpkin patch, corn maze, hayrides, pumpkin carving and all that good stuff. My DS #1 LOVES it, we were at this pumpkin patch near our house once a week starting when they opened last year.

Michelle , as I said before this is fabulous, I love this card. I love so many things about fall. I guess one big factor is the farming is winding down for a while and I will have more time too play, like stamping…… I love the corn harvest, the leaves turning their beautiful oranges and yellows, the nippy mornings , the cows and horses running and kicking up their heels because they are happy too for some cool days. Love fall clothes the beautiful hand woven cotton sweaters and jeans, neat leather jackets and all the great apples and pumpkins. Can’t wait to go with my family to the pumpkin patch, for some apple dumplings, oh I could go on and on but I think you get the picture. I love your card. tfs your unbelievable talents with us.

I love him! I think autumn is my second favorite season. I love the colours the best but I don’t like having to pick up dead grass that my dog tracks into the house or the dead leaves stuck to him! The best part of fall is that its cool outside and I can sleep again, LOL.

    Hi Michelle,
Fall is my favourite season too. I just love the colours and the smell of the falling leaves and the cooler temperatures. One of my favourite things to do is walk through a lot of fallen leaves and kick them as I walk along a nice walking trail. This scarecrow is so cute and I love the corn stalks. I just got back from vacation in Wisconsin and Iowa and I couldn’t wait to check back in here to see what I had missed. You were away when I left. It’s good to be back and see another great card. Take care,
    Trish

A lovely card! I love the colours that you used. I also love the fall season; the crisp mornings, the leaves with there various red colours (where I live now, they are mostly yellows), the crunch as you walk through the fallen leaves, and many years ago when it was allowed the smell of smoke as the leaves were being burned in our neighbourhood. Also my birthday is in fall. :<)

I love Fall for many reasons. Mostly I love the cool smell to the air and the colors of the trees changing. Fall reminds me when as a child we would make apple butter in a large copper kettle on an outside firepit…..using a long wooden stirrer and many family members and friends would be there to help. There would be wonderful food to share, and then later when the apple butter was ready, everyone would pitch in to put it in clean jars. I can taste it now!

I LOVE fall! It is by far my favorite season! I live in central Illinois (where it has also been unseasonable cool) and love the rich oranges and crimsons in the leaves and the way it contrasts with the blue sky…the cool crisp air that gives me a great reason to cuddle up with my hubby…even childhood memories of buying new school clothes and notebooks! I love having my windows open for the fresh air…it’s all good! I knew when I was younger I wanted an autumn wedding…this October we will celebrate 15 years of marriage! 😉

Beautiful card! I love fall because of the lovely colors of the leaves. In California the fall changes are not as dramatic as other places, but I love the crisp morning air, the vibrant colors on some of the trees and the anticipation that the special family holidays are drawing near. Would love to win your card.
