The Wave – Tutorial #114 and Blog Candy

dsc05864.JPG

I have a stormy ocean scene for you today.   I swear when my allergies act up and I’m not feeling well I always reach for shades of blue ink.  The color blue must sooth me.  🙂

Maybe this card will sooth someone else too, so I’ll give it away as blog candy.

To enter for a chance to win this card, please leave me a comment on this post telling me your all time favorite rubber stamping tool, besides rubbers stamps, lol.   I love reading your comments that tell me a bit about yourself.  If you are getting this blog update by e-mail you will need to click this link to leave a comment on this blog post:

I will use a random number generator to pick the winner on the morning of Sunday, September 7th.

OK then, it is time to get on with this stormy scene tutorial.  🙂

Supplies:

Stamps: Impression Obsession “Branches of a Tree”
Paper: Stampin’ Up Whisper White, Basic Black and Tempting Turquoise
Ink: Adirondack Pitch Black, Pool, Denim & Cloudy Blue
Accessories: Brayer, Sponges, White Gel Pen, Circle Coluzzle Template

dsc05865.JPG

Brayered on Pool ink on the right side of a 5″ x 5″ piece of Whisper White card stock.

dsc05848.JPG

Brayered Denim ink at the right and left sides of the card stock.

dsc05849.JPG

Brayered Denim ink at the top of the card stock.

dsc05850.JPG

Used a circle cut with a coluzzle that measures 3 5/8″ and sponge Denim ink lightly at the edge of one side of the circle.  Move the circle up a bit and sponged again.  I did this a total of 5 times.

dsc05851.JPG

dsc05852.JPG

Sponged Denim ink at the left side of the card stock to blend the sponged lines in a bit.

dsc05853.JPG

Tore a cliff shape from a piece of Whisper White card stock.

dsc05854.JPG

Sponged Cloudy Blue ink on the cliff shape.

dsc05855.JPG

Sponged Denim ink on the cliff shape not covering all of the Cloudy Blue ink.

dsc05856.JPG

Sponged Pitch Black ink on the cliff shape not covering the Denim ink entirely.  I also sponged Pitch Black ink on the top of the cliff shape and along the top of curve shape.

dsc05857.JPG

Adhered the cliff shape to the main panel.

dsc05858.JPG

Stamped the tree with Pitch Black ink.

dsc05859.JPG

Sponged some Pitch Black ink at the top of the sky area to add some drama.

dsc05860.JPG

Used the circle mask again and traced one side of it at the top of each wave to create a highlight in the water.

dsc05861.JPG

Assembled the card and here it is finished measuring 5.25″ x 5.25″.

dsc05864.JPG

I hope this tutorial has inspired you to get inky today.

May your day be filled with calm seas.

Until my next post. . . . . . . . .. .

Hugs,

Michelle

OMG, this is so awesome! I have just purchased a brayer and can’t wait to try it out this weekend — I am certain it is going to become one of my favorite things because I love all the brayered cards at SCS! So, having said that, right now I woud have to say that I love my little finger daubers the most because I can be so creative inking my rubber stamps, especially those clear cling ones!

I share your pain, with allergy’s that is, try eating more honey and natural ‘things’ [really is there any such thing anymore] I have found over the yrs that has ‘help’. If all else – fails reach for those allergy pills!!
Bling, bling blilng, anything that is, I find it just completes a card. and I must say, I to love those little daubers

  3. You literally blow me away with your ideas and creativity! This card is amazing. I was thinking of my BF son who is a surfer. What an awesome ocean with the waves this technique would make. I’m pretty boring right now with plain ole sponges. I have tried my brayer many times but just keep going back to the sponging. I also like to use my scalloped circle punch for sponging in my clouds.

Oh my goodness … is about all I can say. This card took my breath away! I am a new stamper, but appreciate beautiful design and goodtechnique! I had never heard of “brayer” but as soon as I finish writing this comment, I’m all over that. I just read through your tutorial which was very clearly written, with wonderful instructions and photos … quite impressive. I’m definitely going to “mark”your blog and look at it often. I wish I lived closer to Ohio …. thank you so much for this beautiful blue wave on this early September morning in Virginia! Awesome!!! Kathy

Michelle, gorgeous, gorgeous card. With Hanna coming our way your card gives such a beautiful visual of the ocean waves. beautiful blues. Another amazing use of brayer and circle cut out. Since following your blog my brayer has become one of my favorite tools along with embossing folders and nesties.

  6. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh – I love this so much!!!!!!!!!! You know I love blue, so you are really tugging the old heartstrings with a chance to win this card!!

My favorite tool is probably my circle punch – well really all my punches. It’s so easy and convenient to stamp something small and not worry about whether it’s straight because I just punch it out and stick it on a card. For some reason I gravitate to circles over squares.

But my favorite consumable is my Pacific Point Blue ink pad. Well, or my Ballet Blue. Possibly my Brilliant Blue. Of course I love my blue Copics. Oh and then there’s blue glitter….

    🙂

Have a great day – really feeling your pain on the allergies. I’m dying!

  7. Wow, this is a gorgeous card. I find it very calming too. Favourite tool besides stamps-Well right now I am experimenting with my new set of 48 Prismacolor markers. I just love them. Second runner up would be punches. Love punches right now too. Thanks for sharing your card Michelle, and also for your blog giveaways!

Stunning! I don’t know how in the world you come up with ways to make waves and once I try it, it’s so easy! Beautiful piece. I drink hot tea each morning as it seems to open my head. Try a long steamy shower too. So sorry you’re not feeling up to snuff. My favorite tool is one you introduced me to, the white gel pen. Well, actually, Jeanne S introduced me to it but I learned how to high light images with it from you. I’ve made so many foamy beach shore scenes for people who have requested them and its just a matter of using that pen. Oh, can I share two favorite tools? I LOVE my new piercing tool, the mighty Push Pin which you recommended as well. Can’t believe the time I spent looking on the net for the perfect piercer and all the time it was right there in my desk. Go have that cup of hot tea and feel better.

This card is so AWESOME. You can just feel the drama! My favorite stamping tool is the embossing gun. Before I had on I would use my toaster. Let me tell you I burned a few cards. I am now addicted to the clear powder thanks you and all your wonderful beautiful tutorials.

Great card! My husband thinks I have every tool under the sun – LOL. I do have a lot (almost as many as my kitchen gadgets!) I have these two ruler type things that have lifted edges in different withds that give you perfect borders on your background papers. Don’t have a clue what they are called but they work great. Yours always are perfect – do you use something special to cut them? I am sorry I always add a question to the end of my post!!!

WOW. I’m stunned. This card is just too cool for words!!

There are two things I use on almost every single card, of course beside the usual. Dimensionals and glitter glue. I love for card recipients to want to touch my cards, and these products do that. These aren’t really tools, though. Hmm.

I do love to emboss and that’s really what hooked me into stamping, as I am sure it does for many others. So I love using my heat tool.

Thanks again for another amazing creation, Michelle! We’re not worthy!!

This card is just beautiful! All of your cards are, but this one really touches me. It reminds me of walking on the beaches of Florida on a moonlit night. I really miss the ocean. So would love to win this card. My favorite tools are my acrylic mounting blocks. I use them for every stamp I own. Of course you have to have them for acrylic, but I use them for unmounted stamps and SU stamps. I have astigmatism and can’t mount SU stamps straight. So I no longer attempt to mount them, I just use my acrylic blocks. Thank you for the beautiful tutorial and a chance to win the card.

Oh boy, my favorite tool, that’s like asking me to pick a favorite pet……. I’d say the one tool that I absolutely, positively, do not regret spending a bunch of money on would be my Japanese Screw Punch. It cost a bit, but nothing else can do what it does. And I use it A LOT!

This card is the most amazing!! I saw a photo of a rainbow and I want to make c card for some friends and I was going to do the same circle thing you did with the waves, you just proved to mt it will work. Your cards always inspire me to be more creative and when I look at something, look at it like I can turn it into a card. Each day you share your amazing work with people you do not even know just so we may pick up alittle of your talent. Thank You for doing that each day. I know this is going to seen kinda crazy but one of my fav stampin tools is a sponge and that is after watching you!!! Thanks Again, Cindi

My favorite tool, this week, is my Scor Pal. I teach classes in my home and love having the cards scored all ready for them, also makes it so easy to have fun projects like treat bags. No fear in scoring anymore! Also, I introduced the brayer in this months cards. We did emboss resist with a cute cow in the pasture http://www.splitcoaststampers.com/gallery/photo/1013973?cat=500&ppuser=51826
I cased one of your cards. The photo isn’t perfect, but you get the idea. I would love to win this beautiful card. Thanks for your continued inspiration. Sunny day in MN

LOL. You mention of allergies made me sneeze. Guess it’s getting to be that time of year.

This is a great card. Very moody & dramatic.

I think my favorite tool(s) at the moment are punches. There are SO MANY shapes and sizes. Do you use them? It would be a great tutorial! (hint, hint)

But I’m beginning to love my brayer too. I’ve only started using it since I’ve seen your work. It truly inspires me. Now if you did a tutorial on brayering, just brayering, maybe I could learn. I’d love to come to your Dayton class, but it’s about 7 hrs away. Just not cost effective for me at the moment.

Anyway. I love your art and tutorials.

    Have a great day!

WOW!! Stunning card. You are so talented. I have so many tools that I use that I love, but I think my blender pen is my go to tool. I use watercolor pencils alot and it really helps bring out the color in those, please being able to use with my ink pads to bring in the colors that I don’t have markers for is wonderful.

Your card is absolutely beautiful. I’ve been rubber stamping for 10 years and I have to admit that I’ve been “afraid” of my brayer all this time. You have inspired me. But now that I’ve been viewing your blog, I’m going to TRY to think outside my box! Thanks for the inspiration. I must say I really can’t alive without my embellishments and fiber

I soooooo want to take one of your classes! Even if I can’t do this myself I would just like to watch you! Your tutorials are fantastic and I look forward to many more. My favorite tool would have to be my SU! paper snips. I cut with them, distress with them, use them as a piercer and a bunch of other things you are probably not supposed to do with scissors.

When I was a student at UMass a few years ago, I had to do a paper on “promontories,” and all that came flooding back when I saw your stunning card. Thanks so much for the tuturial–you are indeed an accomplished artist–and I hope to try out my new brayer and “case” your soothing card!
So far I am enthralled with the white gel pen, as it can be used to show movement, especially in the water, as evidenced by your several examples.
Appreciate your tutorials more than you’ll ever know!! Thanks, Michelle!!

Hi, Michelle! LOVE your work! Hope you might get to do a workshop in Virginia one day — I would really like to take your workshop! As for my favorite tool — I have to say my Stamp-a-ma-jig — when I add a sentiment to a card I really like to get it on there straight and the Stamp-a-ma-jig is a big help!

    Thanks for asking! Happy Friday!

LOVE the card!!! My favorite stamp tool is my Stamp-a-ma-jig NO MORE miss calculations on placement, I don’t know how I lived without one for my first year of stamping. Second is the Prismacolor markers, which you turned me onto by viewing your projects, I mainly used Stampin Up and a few others to get colors needed, BUT I LOVE the Primacolor Markers now, such an array of colors and easy to use ALSO if you look around you can find them cheap. Thanks, Linda

WOW! I’m a first time reader led here by Greg at Marco’s Paper. Again, WOW! I love the card and must try the technique.
My favorite tool is my newest one: a Stamp-a-ma-jig. What, you ask? a Stamp-a-ma-jig is a simple gadget that has allowed me (finally) to position my stamped images exactly where I want on the card. I ordered it from smartrubber.com. I have lots of other tools but this one has solved my problem and saved me lots of paper and time.
    Hope I win……

Michelle! Wow! What a fabulous card! I’ve got to give this a try! I’ll have to see if those blue colors sooth my allergies too. My favorite tool at the moment is the new Fiskars cutting “knife” that fits on your finger. Something I can finally control better than holding onto a knife and trying to cut. Have you ever thought about teaching at Stampaway in Cincinnati? I’ve been the last two years and would love to take some of your classes. Also, if you ever put out a video/DVD with your brayering techniques (hint! hint!), I’d be first in line to purchase!
