Mister Cardinal – Tutorial #127

dsc06240.JPG

BEWARE, enablers are every where!!!!!

I found an enabler in Austin, TX at one of my workshops, her name is Joy McHargue.  Joy showed me this set “Season of Splendor” from Close To My Heart.   She wanted to know what I would do with this set.  Well I took one look at the beautiful stamps and the great envelope packaging with the cute snap closure and I instantly wanted to see more of this line.

Joy the Enable gave me a catolog.  I can’t believe I haven’t seen this line of stamps before.  Anyway, I had a nice crisp Close to My Heart Catolog and a long plane ride from Austin, TX to Ohio.  The very next day I was placing my order, lol.  I’m so very, very weak!

Long story short, Joy, here is an example of what I would do with this set, lol.

If you wish to be enabled too, here is Joy’s website at Close to My Heart:  http://joysfunprojects.myctmh.com/WebSites/Templates/MyCTMH/Template1.aspx?Reload=Yes you can shop 24/7.

Let’s get started on the tutorial.  🙂

Supplies:

Stamps: Close to my Heart “Season of Splendor”
Paper: Stampin’ Up Whisper White, Bordering Blue, Not Quite Navy
Ink: Stampin’ Up Bordering Blue, Not Quite Navy, Old Olive
Accessories: Prismacolor Markers, Brayer, Versamark Marker, Fine Detail Clear embossing Powder, Heat Gun, Silver Brads, Photo Corner Punch, White Gel Pen, Sponges

dsc06242.JPG

Stamped Holly leaves with Palette Noir Black ink on a 4″ x 5.5″ piece of Whisper White card stock.

dsc06214.JPG

Stamped the Holly Leaf stem stamp with Noir Black to extend the branch.

dsc06215.JPG

Stamped the image one more time to continue to extend the branch.

dsc06216.JPG

Colored the top half of the leaves with a Prismacolor Light Olive Green marker.

dsc06217.JPG

Colored the bottom half of the leaves with a Dark Olive Green Marker.

dsc06218.JPG

Went over the Leaves and branch with a Versamark marker.

dsc06219.JPG

Heat embossed the images with fine detail clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

dsc06220.JPG

Stamped the Cardinal with Palette Noir Black ink.

dsc06221.JPG

Colored the Cardinal in with a Crimson Red marker.

dsc06222.JPG

Added Mahogany Red to the bottom of the bird, wing and head.

dsc06223.JPG

Went over the bird again with the Crimson Red marker to blend the colors together.

dsc06224.JPG

Colored in the beak with a Burnt Ochre marker.

dsc06225.JPG

Colored over the entire Cardinal with a Versamark marker.

dsc06226.JPG

Heat embossed the Cardinal with clear embossing powder and a heat gun.

dsc06227.JPG

Note:  I use a small paint brush to brush away any stray embossing powder before heating the image.

dsc06243.JPG

Brayered Bordering Blue ink at the top of the card stock.

dsc06228.JPG

Note:  I test images and colors on my scrap paper before I stamp them on my project.  This helps to keep me from groaning in agony so early in the morning.  🙂

dsc06229.JPG

Stamped Olive leaves with Old Olive ink.

dsc06230.JPG

Stamped the leaves solid image with Bordering Blue to fill the leaves in.

dsc06231.JPG

Stamped some berries with Palette Noir Black ink and colored them in with a Prismacolor Crimson Red marker.

dsc06232.JPG

Sponged Bordering blue on the left side top half of the card stock.

dsc06233.JPG

Added some Not Quite Navy ink at the top left side of the card stock.

dsc06234.JPG

Oops!  I had an ink smug at the lower left side of the card stock.  Time to sponge some Bordering Blue to cover that up.  Yep, I do that all the time.  🙂

dsc06235.JPG

Added some highlights to the tops of some of the embossed leaves and stems with a White Gel pen.

dsc06237.JPG

Assembled the card front and here you have it finished measuring 5″ x 6.5″.

Note: those are Photo corner punches in the corners under the main image.  🙂

May your day be filled with the sweet sounds of birds singing and please watch out for those enablers!  They can be deadly to your check book.

Until my next post. . . . . . . . . . .

Hugs,

Michelle

Gorgeous! I do appreciate all the little tid bits of information you include in your tutorials. I’ve always tried removing extra EP with my finger tip but it was never very clean. Use a paint brush…..duhhh. How can one miss something so obvious. Thank goodness I have you to keep me from being REALLY challenged! I’m off to check out that new line I’ve never heard about either. BTW, isn’t it wonderful to be surrounded by enablers! You are one of mine! Michelle, thanks for starting my day off beautifully; I hope your day is just as wonderful.

    Dear Michelle,
    This card is really GORGEOUS!!
With your permission I would love to case it for my Christmas Cards.
My Friends and Family would LOVE a ZINDORF christmas card!!!
(They are getting really picky these days LOL) Remember They love the cards I make that are inspired by you and when I give them a card that isn’t I hear “it’s no ZINDORF” too funny!!!

OK, shall we talk about enablers! Hi Michelle every time you demonstrate from a new stamp company I haven’t heard about there’s more money out the window, lol! Even stamps that I haven’t previously liked (three trees from stampin up!) you do things with them that makes me want them! I looked at the set and said yuk. NOW however, … Thank you so much for your tutorials.

  5. Great tutorial as always, Michelle :0)
You amaze me how you look at perfectly ordinary uninspiring stamps and manipulate them into wonderful works of art. You have an extraordinary gift :0)

CTMH has card stock that has a white core. Distress it with one of those things you buy at a beauty supply house that has four sides with different textures (you use it on your nails like an emery board). A must for rubber stampers; i.e. removing leftover vulcanizing stuff on a new bold rubber (not acrylic) stamp. I put card stock through my Cuttlebug using embossing folders then distress it with this tool and the effect is great! One of my favorites is the bird sitting on a blade of grass; also the spray of leaves, dotted swiss, and others…

To the ultimate enabler of all——>Michelle!*LOL* You make us want every stamp you use to create these beautiful works of art. I love the way you extended this branch stamp. It’s so clever and creative as always. You rock! Thanks for all the great advice and tips. I learn from you all the time.

  8. Hi Michelle-
I am surprised you didn’t know about CTMH this long. That is right, you don’t visit my blog, I visit yours 😉

I wanted to get this set, since I live in St. Louis, but now I am going to get it because of your inspiration. Thanks for enabling me 🙂

Michelle, this is a beautiful card! I love the vibrant red of the cardinal. Yes, I love CTMH, too! I rediscovered them a year ago and could not believe how much they’d changed from 8 years ago. They are very much my style now and I look forward to every catalog they put out.

Lovely, Michelle! I love cardinals. They make me remember my mom. You did a wonderful job with these images (who would of thunk, bordering blue holly leaves?) The image is great and I love the way you mounted it. I am a real groupie!

this comment doesn’t have anything to do with this cardinal card, but i wanted to still thank you for all your inspiration through the tutorials. when i first saw your tuts i was sure this is what i needed to know how to make cards, just the pictures step by step, even though your work was well out of my league. i realized soon, you don’t use only su sets, so i went through all your tuts and started with the ones i could mimick using my su sets, learned alot, especially the clear ep then filling in with brayering and sponging, then i went through this phase to buy the sets you use on the buy/sell forum so i could make the cards i really liked out of your selection, my problem is now that i bought like 20 new sets, i want to try my own cards, but just before i do this i want to say… i am probably your typical admirer and have responded the way any amateur would, and i know i am so thankful, just want to say thanks from all of us for giving us a solid start for creative card making, God Bless, and i know i will keep doing your tutorials, as soon as i fail at my creations, oh yeah, i wanted to share my tip also: i just use my craft inks and then the clear ep, that way i save a step and my versamark pad, works for me. thanks again

Love this card. Looks like I need to try my hand at this one for Christmas cards. Glad to see a Close to my Heart set! I have a couple of catalogs from a demonstrator I met through several other people. But, I found it hard to figure out how big the stamps were. I’ve only ordered an ink pad. Looks like I might be spending more with CTMH than I thought! I love this set!
