Quiet Moment – Tutorial #159 and Blog Candy!

dsc07166.JPG

Today’s tutorial has a bit of a different color combination going on.  Sometimes I get in a rut and use the same colors over and over.  Thought I would experiment and brighten things up a bit with this card.

I’m using a stamp sheet by Innovative Stamp Creations “Minibook Series: Be Thankful”.

Here is the link to Innovative Stamp Creations Website:   http://www.innovativestampcreations.com/ischomepage.html

I also have a stamp sheet of these to give away as blog candy!!!!

dsc07169.JPG

If you want to be entered to win this great stamp sheet all you need to do is leave a comment on this post telling me your favorite sunset/sunrise color combination.  If you are getting this blog update by e-mail you will need to click on this link so you can leave a comment at the bottom of this post:   http://zindorf.blogs.splitcoaststampers.com/2009/01/04/quite-moment-tutorial-159-and-blog-candy/

I will use a random number generator to select the winner on Wednesday, January 7th.  Good luck to all!

Now on with the tutorial.

Supplies:

Stamps: Innovative Stamp Creations “Be Thankful”
Paper: Stampin’ Up Whisper White, Soft Sky & Basic Black
Ink: Stampin’ Up Summer Sun, More Mustard, So Saffron, Distress inks Brushed Corduroy, Black Soot, Walnut Stain, Mustard Seed & Weathered Wood
Accessories: Brayer, 1 1/4″ Circle Punch, White Gel Pen, Green & Brown Faber Castell Markers, Post it Notes, Sponges

dsc07170.JPG

Brayered So Saffron ink at the top of a 3.75″ x 4.5″ piece of  Whisper White Card stock.

dsc07144.JPG

I wanted it to be brighter and warmer in color so I brayered over the So Saffron Ink with Summer Sun Ink.   Yep, that’s better.  🙂

dsc07145.JPG

Punched a 1 1/4″ circle out of the sticky part of a post it note and put it on the card stock as a mask for the sun.  If I would have masked the sun before any color was put on the White card stock, of course the sun would be white.  I did it this way so the sun would not be so stark in color.

dsc07146.JPG

Brayered More Mustard ink at the top of the card stock only going down far enough from the top to go over the Sun mask.

dsc07147.JPG

Removed the sun mask.

dsc07148.JPG

Streaked Weathered Wood Distress Ink at the bottom of the card stock using the direct to paper technique.   These Tim Holtz Distress ink pads are so very perfect for direct to paper techniques because the ink pad is raised up from the base of the pad.

I streaked the ink in order to try create some ripples in the water.

dsc07149.JPG

Brayered Eathered Wood Distress ink at the bottom of the card stock to blend the streaking in a bit.

dsc07150.JPG

Used the same direct to paper streaking technique with a Mustard Seed Distress ink pad in the middle of the card stock and going in to the Weathered Wood inked area a bit.  That really warmed the water up some.

Be careful not to cover all of your Weathered Wood ink with the Mustard Seed ink.  Remember Blue and Yellow make Green.

dsc07151.JPG

Masked the sky area of the main image panel with a Post it note and Sponged More Mustard ink at the post it note edge to create a little beach area.

dsc07152.JPG

Took the post it note mask off and flipped it around.  Now I am masking the water and the beach area with the post it note.  Sponged Brushed Corduroy ink on to create some mountains in the distance.

dsc07153.JPG

Added some Darker Walnut Stain ink to the bottoms of the mountains.

dsc07154.JPG

Stamped the Cattails with Black Soot ink.

dsc07155.JPG

dsc07156.JPG

Sponged More Mustard ink heavily at the top Right corner of the main image panel to create a little interest in the sky.

dsc07157.JPG

Outlined the right sides of the Cattails with a Brown Maker.

dsc07159.JPG

Outlined the right sides of the Cattail Leaves with a Green Marker.

dsc07160.JPG

Added a few highlights to the Cattails and a few dashes in the water area using a White Gel Pen.

dsc07161.JPG

Used the direct to paper technique again on the bottom left corner of the main image panel and on the right side of a Soft Sky Background panel.

dsc07163.JPG

Assembled card and here it is finished measuring 5 5/8″ square.

dsc07166.JPG

I hope this tutorial has inspired you to experiment with color combinations today.  I think you will be pleasantly surprised!

May your day today be filled with peaceful scenes.

Until my next post. .. . . . . . . . .

Hugs,

Michelle

Wow Wow what else can one say. This card is just amazing, it brings back so many memories of beautiful sunsets I have seen on different vacation spots. My favorite is when you have blues, purples and pinks. As always thank you for sharing your talent with us all.

My idea of a perfect sunset has dark grey (SU Basic Grey) blending into burgundy, ruby red, really rust, cameo coral, blush blossom, so saffron, bordering blue, then into going grey, sahara sand, and into a very muted citiscape (tall building silhouette) horizon of dark grey again. My husband has some beautiful sunsets featured on his music web site – musicalgym.com.

  3. Michelle,

Your color combination is fab and I love the card! My favorite sunset colors are yellow, blue, pink, and purple. Reminds me of Canon Beach in the Pacific Northwest. Hope your holidays were great and you are refreshed, I read about your schedule the other day, it made me tired just reading about it 🙂

    Beautiful card Michelle!
Normally I would never put orange and pinks together, but I love it when mother nature puts them together at sunset. I was thinking of giving cameo coral a try if I ever get around to brayering….
    Love your tutorials!

We live on a lake in Arkansas and face towards the west. To say the least, we have the most amazing sunsets imaginable. My favorite combination is pink, lavender, peach and azure. Do love your color combination too … very striking. For some reason, it reminds me of a perfect morning to go duck hunting (but I don’t hunt ducks).

My favorite color for any sunset is a golden yellow over dark blue water with siloutettes of palm trees – we had one of those in Fiji in Nov – one we will always remember.

WOW. What inspiration. Thank goodness for the great colors and the fact that we are now gaining approx. 1 minute more of sunlight each day! Yippee for us. My favorite sunset colors are the bright pinks and purples. Thanks for again inspiring me! Happy 2009!

  11. It’s so good to have you back Michelle!!! I would have to say that my favorite color combinations for sunsets are the pinks. I live on the coast and we get the most beautiful pink skies. I have yet to duplicate it on to a card though.

Lovely card. This color combination is fabulous. We livbe on a lake in northern NY and think our sunsets, in blues, pinks, and lavenders are the best but, really what sunset isn’t a work of art!

Wow. Gorgeous card! I adore these colors you used. I use the same colors you used for the sunset, but I might add a little purple or red to the sky area around the sun. For a sunrise I’d add a lot more red to the sun area and more black because is would still be somewhat dark in my sunrise.

I missed your inspiration and tutorials in December. Glad to have you back!

Oh my this is so pretty, the cat tails look so real, wonderful work! Oh boy I never really thought about the colors of a sunset that I like, I remember a few over the lake when we went camping when I was younger and I remember seeing like an aqua with like a pinkish toward orange glow above that I can remember thinking was just beautiful!

    Michelle,

Thanks for another inspiring tutorial, I can almost feel the soft warmth of the morning sun. Living in Hawaii, each sunrise and sunset is a wonderful surprise of the most beautiful colors!

My favorite sunrise starts with the landscape of trees in Not Quite Navy. Then the sky would be in Almost Amethyst, Lovely Lilac, Pumpkin Pie, Cameo Coral and Rose Red. With the Zindorf touch, these colors would come alive.

Hi Michelle – Very nice card – glad you’re back to blogging, and hoping your holidays were joy filled. I think my favorite sunsets are when the sun is really almost gone and there are clouds in the sky and they glow that crazy purple red. There is a pretty high mountain (at least in east coast measures) by me and when you hit it right you see those fabulous colors.

My favorite sunset color combo is peach and baby blue. I take alot of pictures over the water at sunset and the peach enhances the sky and the blues follows the water color. Thanks for another great card.

Thanks for the chance to win! Lately our frozen Nebraska sunsets and sunrises have given us some gorgeous deep corals, oranges, and yummy pinks. I recently picked up Mountain Rose and Peach Bellini dye ink pads from Adirondack and I think they will work well for these colors.

Another beautiful card. Your work is just amazing…you make it look so easy! I love all sunsets. Growing up in San Diego, I loved being at the beach to watch the sun fade away behind the ocean. I really like the deep orange and almost blackish look to a sunset but I also love the deep purple, light pink and bright blue because it’s not seen as often.

Hi! Great card! My favorite sunset was in St. Thomas – when the last tip of the sun goes down, there is a gorgeous spark of green along the horizon of the ocean. It’s difficult to describe the color, but it is similar to a brilliant emerald green, with brilliant gold above. It’s absolutely an amazing bit of God’s handiwork! Thanks for the candy opportunity! I’ve got to go with deep oranges on the horizon with varying shades of blue as twilight deepens. This is especially beautiful with a new moon and Venus in the sky.

I love it when you use a stamp set I own! (so if by chance you pick me, although I never win so …. – you can send the stamp set to someone else!)
    Beautiful as always.
I love any sunset you do! So any color combination you pick is great with me! Actually to be totally honest I am partial to the sunsets that have the pinks in them – I love the contrast of the pinks and blues and white clouds … I saw one tonight that was so pretty.
Thanks for sharing – love your work.

I love your card! My favorite sunset colors are the bright vivid ones where it looks like a ball of molten fire melting on the horizon with a line of gold brightly obscuring the actual point of entry into the Earth. Does that make sense? LOL. Of course, I like any of the color combinations Mother Nature decides to throw our way and find them all equally awe inspiring.

I love this card. You always amaze me–your brayer technique is beautiful! You’re truly an artist. I’m not great with sunsets; I copy yours. But for colors, I like saffron, really rust–basically oranges and reds. Thanks again.
