Chilling – Tutorial #446

Hey There,

I’m back from beautiful Connecticut and had a wonderful time as usual teaching my brayer techniques to some truly fabulous students.   Here lately, I have been asking my advance brayer students to challenge me with a scene that they would like for me to do as a tutorial here on my blog.  Well, my Monroe, Connecticut students challenged me to create icicles and to use the penguin.   I think I covered both with this scene.  What do you think?

I like it!

Let’s get started on today’s tutorial. . . . .

Ripped a hill in a post it note and used it to mask my snow area on a 3.5″ x 5.5″ piece of Whisper White.

Brayered Baja Breeze ink at the top of the card stock.

Brayered Island Indigo ink at the top of the card stock, not covering the Baja Breeze ink entirely.

Brayered Not Quite Navy ink at the top of the card stock, not covering the Island Indigo ink entirely.

Brayered Sahara Sand ink at the post it note edge.

Removed the mask and created another mask with 2 hills ripped in it.  Put it below the horizon line and sponged Baja Breeze ink at the post it note edge to create a lower hill.

Removed the mask and stamped the penguin using Basic Black ink.

Colored the penguin in with a white gel pen, Basic Black marker and More Mustard marker for his beak and feet.

took a 3.5″ square piece of vellum and cut icicle shapes in it using my paper snips.

Did the same thing with a 3.5″ square piece of Whisper White card stock.

Sponged a bit of Sahara Sand ink on the right sides of the icicles.

Layered the vellum and Whisper White icicles and adhered them to the top of the main image panel.

Punched a Decorate label punch out of Baja Breeze card stock and then cut it in half.

Punched a Snowflake out of Whisper White card stock and cut it in half.

Added 1 Not Quite Navy, 2 Baja Breeze and 1 Sahara Sand card stock panels, the punches and 4 mini brads.

Here is the finished card measuring 5″ x 6.5″.

May your day be filled with cool breezes.

Until my next post. . . . .  .

I cannot believe how much dimension you got on those icicles. All I could think when I saw it was what new and wonderful product SU was offering to make that kind of 3-D effect. Some kind of puffy paint??? embossing powder??? I never even considered it was your artful use of sponging and shading with color And the use of vellum is a a revelation too!! Remember when vellum was all the rage in stamping? I’d love to see more of your ideas with that.

    Jenn F….in Ilene’s path. YIKES!!!

Great Job Michelle! Those white icicles really pop! When I first looked at them I thought you had used puffy fabric paint. I am enjoying practicing the techniques I learned at your workshops…

Wow – LOVE IT!!!! I cannot wait to try the icicle technique with the velum – and I am so excited that you used the penquin stamp that you gave us at the Monroe workshop too so I can try to play tonight!

Wow!! Another beautiful card. And I love the fact that you used an idea from the Monroe workshop. I had a great time at the workshops. Thank you for sharing your gift with us.

  5. This was absolutely mind-blowing for me. This is my first technique to look through…and I am amazed. First of all, I love the way you brayer the different colors next to each other, to give depth, and to show different colors in the sky…incredible! And, I really loved your hand-made embellishments by cutting the Spellbinders shape and snow-flake punch in half, and using them in the corners. I love to see awesome hand-made embellishments any time of the day. And, of course, the icicles. Stunning! I was thinking it was white glue thick to have it cast shadows. It is wonderful how they cast the shadow, and really look as if they have depth. This is amazing! I can’t wait to get through the other tutorials! Thanks for making them.

BTW, would you consider selling me just a Penguin? My grandson, 3 years old, loves the penguin exhibit at Sea World…and every time we go…we spend about an hour watching them stand there and swimming! He would love a card and wrapping paper in penguin wrap. Will you please let me know? Thank you!
